ok heres the deal my friend has a 95 gt auto and allegedly he got his trans rebuilt with a 2800 stall, shift kit, and a 3.73 ring and pinion. the car does run a lil better than it did before he got this work done because the shifts are more positive and on time, however i dont feel the stall or gear at all. it seems as though they just rebuilt the trans with a stock convertor and threw a shift kit in there. lets put it like this before he got the work done ide beat him by maybe 4 cars and even now the deficit seems no different. i seen the reciept/quote for the work so i know he isnt lying but did the shop he took it to screw him or what? if they did indeed do what he paid well over 2k for them to do then why isnt the car reacting better to these such mods.

well what does the car stall at? and are r's higher at cruising speed than before? you could pull off the diff cover and count the teeth on the ring and pinion. or get under the car and see how much the wheels turn compared to the drive shaft (mark both with chalk or something). i sure as hell hope a shop wouldnt try to pull something like that. :notnice:

I lost a bunch of top end in my 5 speed with 3.55's...YOU CAN FEEL THE DIFFERENCE....I would do what 90MustangHatch said and mark the tires and drive shaft and see if the drive shafts turns 3 and 3/4's (about) per rotation of the rear tires and if it isnt then I would sue the **** out of the f#$%^rs.....

How did you lose a bunch of top end...the gear ratio practically multiplys your power (not literally but by the SOTP)...you should have gained...

To the original poster...stall it up and see where the tires break loose at...and it could have something to do with the auto being controlled by the computer (AODE)...compared to the foxes AOD...

you lose top-end because the engine is spinning faster for less speed. ie. 3000rpms at 65mph instead of before at 2500rpms at 65mph.

If your talking about topend speed I would be willing to bet that a 355 geared car vs. a 273 geared car...the 355 would run a faster top speed and get their quicker...that is why people get gears...it "multiplys the power"...

youre absolutely right. a stock stang will have a higher top speed with gears, as long as they arent too steep. the car just doesnt have enough power to make it all the way through 5th with a 2.73, but the 3.55 or 3.73 gear will let it happen :nice:

Back to the original question "Was my friend robbed?"- In the good ol US of A you are innocent until proven guilty. Its unfortunate that you assume anything before you checked it out. Just because it's a 2800 stall doesn't mean that its gonna stall at 2800 behind a stock motor. Also, does that mean that the converter will stall on the brake at 2800 or flash at 2800? It wouldn't even take 5 minutes to check what the rear end ratio is- so why don't you check it out first and then get back to us.

sorry fellas ive been away for the computer for a couple days, however i had suggested for him to do the driveshaft/tire turn deal b/c thats how i figured my 98 gt has a 2.73 (not quite 3 full turns on the shaft at one full turn of the tire), but he doesnt have time or somethin i guess . the car does brake stall a tad bit higher than before, ide say around 2200 max before the tires start to break loose. i too believe that with more mods the stall will become more evident, but there are absolutely no signs of a 3.73 in that car. im gonna be doin a tune up on it this weekend so ill put it up in the air and see whats what. actually i kinda hope he was cheated or somethin, b/c theres no reason that car should be that slow with both those mods!

As a fellow South East Michigan resident I'd like to know who did the work?

FYI: When I went from my original 2.73 to a 3.73 there was a huge difference in the way the car felt and reved. I bet if he had an auto that his original gear was either 3.08 or 3.23(?) so the differnece in feel would be more subtle.
If the speedo gear was not changed, the gage will read much higher. If you get out on I-696 and blend with traffic and the speedo says 100 mph, then you know the gear was changed because the 'normal' speed on I-696 is 85 mph :D
