What do the cop cars run in a 1/4?

Just curious, my entire life i've seen ( and been the victim of) state troopers, and highway patrol cars, running just about anything down that they come in contact with. Does anyone here know what highway patrol cars run in a 1/4? I've heard 225 HP, but i think that's a crock of crap, LOL. I am a miliitary police but believe you me our cars, don't come close to what i see on the highways. Oh yeah i'm talking about the crown vic's and stangs, fords baby.

Crown vics are slow...I would only worry about the Mustang GT and z28 equipped highway patrol cars.

Your "cop cars" are stock...except for the fact that they are programmed where they are either governed higher or not at all. The Vic's topspeed are usually around 130-135 for the 01+ PI headed ones...and it takes a while for those land yachts to get up there...

A magazine did a test a few years back where they tested a dealership stock crown victoria and a police interceptor equipped car, guess who won? The stock dealership car...because it didn't have the weight of the sirens, electronics, guns, safety objects, etc...

The cop cars usually get a heavy duty water pump, (edited: alternator), etc...and some little upgrades for suspension to help them out a bit...but nothing to worry about.

Basically any cop car you see, see it for what it is. A crown vic is a crown vic, a ls1 camaro is an ls1 camaro, etc...nothing special.

Not sure what they do to the police crown vics in the US, but here in Canada they have upgraded alternators to run all the electronics, upgraded suspension, but the engine is STOCK.

Fastest I've had one is 215km/hr. They can take a beating though .

heck in my area they are running Dodge Intrepids now. At least in the city anyway. They suck. Street racing was so bad where I used to live they had a few undercover cops using modded Z06's to catch them when they tried to run.

Have you seen the zo6's? How do you know they were modified? Where do you live so that the state can buy that county zo6 cop cars to beat on?

There are all kinds of cop cars, nothing special. They are "stock cars" in general. Intrepids, Impalas, Crown Vic's, Caprice's, B4C Camaros, etc...etc.

When I was driving down VA i have seen a 3rd Gen camaro fly past me on route 95 and I was doing about 80, i was like damn, then I seen the hidden lights go on and pull someone over.

Those cops cars run everything down because they can drive good. They're put through a lot of training to out run most any average person no matter what they drive. And they're trained to stay as calm as possible and make smart decisions.They dont make stupid mistakes like the people they're chasing tend to do from being nervous.

I wish I could say that about local cops...

Usually that is only present in the big cities...

Cops are rarely trained in "performance driving"...

I have been bit by one of the Marauders down here in south fla. Really cool guy he has 18" cobra r. Cobra emblems and in talking to him told me his at least have under drive pullys, a steeda cold air intake, Diablo Predator. He said a shop in south fla did the same work to all the Marauders and z28 so watch out on the tunrpike

my uncle just so happend to be cop in piqua ohio. not a big crime city but they have 3 musatngs. to 82's and one 88. they are some powerful cop cars. and i think that they could do 13 second 1/4 runs if not faster. but my advise. dont try to out run the law. no matter how hard you try..... they have the upper hand.

My bone stock 1990 special service notch back that I bought at auction ran a 14.8 right off the auction floor with no mods, right down to the Goodyear Gatorbacks , and motorcraft plugs and filters, on 110000 miles. As far as I know the only changes made were a oil cooler, 3:08's, and computer programming. The computer programing was a source of controversy, no one knew if they actually did it. It did feel stronger than other stock notch backs I have driven. I have gone 145 in a State Trooper Caprice with vette engine, and 140 in a service notch back, but the front end started lifting so we had to back off. I believe the driving training is what makes the difference.

My dad, now retired, was a 33 year veteran of the Pittsburgh police.

Back in the 80s, when they were allowed to engage in vehicle pursuits, they had a couple of GNXs as interceptor cars. All had stainless steel aftermarket exhaust on them. They could have had other modifications, but that's all I remember. My dad took me for a ride in one when I was little...man did that thing haul.

IIRC they have a MM Driveshaft, which allows them to avoid the vibrations some Marauders get at the top end. 4.10's X-cal2 with Reinhart tune, intake and I'm sure there are a few other things I'm missing.

Around here they have new Mach 1's they are marked but you still don't want to run they are quick.

I asked a local enforcement officer to run at our local drag strip for are grass roots run what you brung 1/8 mile race day. She laughed and said they would not be allowed to do that because then we would all know how fast there cars are. I said well for us guys racing there we know which cars could out run cop cars. however i pointed out that we would not do that because we also know that the speed of sound is quicker then our cars and with the police officers radios we would not out run them. She told me to get a hold of highways police detachment to see if they would bring a camaro or mustang to races. I tried but they declined. I thought it would have been a neat show for the crowd to see. Plus i wanted to out run a police car and not get in trouble for it.

The last of the LS-1, B4C Camaros can run the 1/4 mile in just a tick over 14 seconds. The newer P71 Crown Vics can run it in about 16 flat, but you'll find times all over the place because Ford kept changing the rear gear ratios up and down from '99 on. I believe the new Dodge Charger police cars are running in the low 15's.

Like GearHd6 said, a lot of the cops' advantage comes from making fewer mistakes than the guy they're chasing. The person fleeing makes last second turns that are poorly planned, and loses a lot of speed, if not total control. The officer chasing gets more time to plan the turn, and can make a controlled, faster maneuver.

If the fleeing individual has a faster car, then the only advantage he will have is if he goes straight and fast. But, as the saying goes, you can't outrun a radio.
