What DRs to get?

Well I went to the track this past weekend. I got a new best, however, my 60's are still pathetic. So I figured this would be the perfect time to get some DRs. I plan on getting 255/50-16s, so I can put them on the stock 16" wheels. These will be dedicated track tires, so I dont need to worry about wear or how they are in the rain. I was mainly looking at the MT ET Radial and the BFGs. I know Nittos are a good tire, but from what I've heard, they are more of the daily driven drag radial than the other two brands. So what does everyone suggest? I really want to give the MTs a shot, since it seems no one has them yet, but they are about $30 more each, which is a decent amount to a college student. Also, should I be concerned about breaking anything? I've heard horror stories about people breaking T5s, but it seems that those that do powershift, which I dont. I was also wondering if people with experience with these tires could also post their best 60' times. Thanks a lot.

M/Ts are supposed to be awesome tires. I have heard people compare them to slicks. So what if nitto can be a daily driven drag radial. It really doesn't matter. The BFG's have to take some time to wear in. Which means a few times at the track, while the nittos just have to be heated up for like 6 seconds. BTW I am going with either Nitto, or BFG. M/T doesn't look good for a d/d. If you are so worried about it not being a D/D Why not get slicks?

I agree with Mackey, if these are not going to be driven on the street then why even consider DR's? I mean, I love DR's and I have had great success with them, but if you have a dedicated set of wheels for them, get some ET streets or something. Given your situation, I wouldn't even look at the BFG or the Nitto. Go for either the MT ET radials, or MT ET street. I run 26X10.5X16 ET street on a set of stock 16" waffle wheels. I run them with 19+lbs of air too so they are very stable. I pulled off a 1.65 60' yesterday with them, and I know there is more to come.

I have been thinking about slicks, but I dont want to break anything. Or have the least possibility of breaking anything. Im in college, so I need my car basically everyday. I also have a totally stock rearend and cannot afford a new rear diff and new axles right now. When I get 4.10s I plan on beefing up the rear. Im still basically totally up in the air on what I will get, basically they just have to fit the stock wheels.

Well, no matter what, stickies tires themselves won't break parts... high rpm launches will. So, get the tires that will hold everything you can throw at them, but be cautious on the launch. Also, run them with a good bit of air too, this will take away a little of their bite.

I really dont think there is a better daily driver tire than the nitto 555R. They hook great and wear great. I will never get anything else, for the street and track, I might try some bfgs next summer though. But if you have an extra set of rims that you are gonna just use for the track, i would definitly get E.T. Streets, and jsut launch a little soft. Or slip the clutch hard, without the shock of a 5k dump your car should hold up just fine.

My motor is all stock except for bolt ons,Im running nittos rite now on my 16' ponies, yes, there a great street tire also.I wouldnt use them though if your stang is 12.5 seconds or quicker in the 1/4.I also have Hoosier Quick Time Pros,on a set of 10 holers!Awsome tire :nice: I have some et-streets that I had on the 10 holers, but the Hoosiers are way better!! But they are both bias-ply tires so they s@ck in the rain :notnice: I would look into the new M/T drag radials :nice:

I say for your power level and worrying about breakage, get the BFG's in 255/50/16 for sure. I have the same setup and have run a string of 1.92 60's. I have lowering springs, so that hurts my 60's a bit. The BFG's are much more consistent than the Nitto's. I have 315 Nitto's on my street wheels and they spin more often than they hook good. For the street they cant be beat for the price though. I have gotten ~20k miles out of the Nitto's and they are now bald, but still hook awesome on the street.

I had some great launches with my 275/50/15 BFG Dr's. Many 1.7's and my best of 1.66 60ft. Although mine are totally done now (I can see the cords)and even if they're great I'll be trying the Mt Dr's next time I think. Apparently they have the same compound as the ET Street.

What kind of pressure do you run? I ran 12psi and I cut a best of like 1.85...pretty chitty. It pissed me off though because sometimes they would just get down prepping and I would go out there and dropped it at 4.5k and it would bog but as the prep ran down anything above 3k would spin. I guess it just takes some getting used to and mine are fairly new, not quite broken in yet. Any good tips with them? I would LOVE to cut a 1.66 with these tires!

Its sad that I just learned how to launch good with those tires. The season is ended, so are my tires. Even if MOST people say to not go lower than 12-13psi, have you tried lower ? I have mine at 10.5-11psi and it hooks pretty good on a under average track. I dont dump the clutch either...I kinda make it grab from launching at 3000rpm or so. You REALLY have to make it grab not dump it. Thats how I do it with the Spec clutch. I think I can do 1.7's on pretty much any track condition now that I now how to launch properly. On that 1.66 60ft launch( They had just put the sticky stuff:D), I still cant beleive that I missed 3rd ! That was my at least 12.6 run :nonono: Here's what a 10.5-11psi launch looks like with those. Look at the nice wrinkle:

Hmmm, so should I go with the 10.5*26 ET Streets or the ET Street radial or BFG DR (both 255/50-16). Would I really not notice a difference with either of the three? Im leaning towards the ET Street Radial since Im sure itll be more than enough traction for my power level and its seems to be the better comprosmise between the three. But then again, I could just buy the ET Streets and be done with it. Decisions, decisions.

Pretty much dumping it from ~ 3k, any more rpm and it would spin more than I would like. I say get some MT Radials, thats probably the best compromise between the 3. Dont expect a stock clutch to hold up long under hard launches with drag radials though. I plan on rebuilding the trac-lok & upgrading to 31 spline axles this summer and going with ET streets, 26x10.5x16. Also you dont HAVE to run tubes if you swap the wheels at the track, most guys dont. If you plan on driving to the track on the slics though you gotta run tubes.

FWIW I saw a 1st gen camaro with a 502CI big block running low 10's on MT et radials this summer. So, if it can support that amount of torque I'm sure it'll hold up well for you. I was gonna go with the MT's, but they came out in June, 2 months after I needed them.
