what the advantage of welding axle tubes?

and where can i get them welded? and is there a special way to weld them?and how do i make sure their straight? and last but not least how much should i expect to pay to weld them? and does anybody know where i can purchase a nice welder for not so much money maybe $300 so i dont have to ask so many Question?????????????

people weld them to keep the actual tube from shifting in the housing. from what i know, the axle tubes are actually pressed into the rear so guys usually run a bead of weld where they are pressed in. its clearly noticeable where they meet. i've always thought about doing this but its really for cars running mega hp.

There is also a LOT of risk if done wrong. If the rear end is not in a jig to hold it perfect you end up with a rear end that is toast.

A jig would help to keep things aligned, but but a good welder will make the difference, by not inducing thermal stresses that can cause some warping.

I agree, no jig... no weld. Most places that do this have a large solid rod of metal that fits snuggly into the rear end from tip to tip that keeps everything nice and straight when welding the tubes. I don't have mine welded but I wish I did. There are aftermarket axle tube brackets available too that bolt to holes that the dog bone weight used to use and they then connect near the shock mounting location forming a triangle so to speak. This will prevent the wheel and axle tube from moving foward and bending/twisting. I know GMKILLR runs these on his car. I've thought about buying and/or making a set for a while now.

what's the benefit of doing this though? is it worth it for a car that is only mildly modded. Where is that breaking point?
