Whats the deal with losing the smog pump?

Nope no real performance gains. I removed mine because the pump locked up and it was cheaper to throw it away than to replace it. I guess it is probably illegal in all 50 states since it is emmisions equipment  . If you live somewhere where they do emmisons testing you are best off leaving it on. Removing it just basically cleans up the engine bay a bit.

we don't have emmissions testing in va. yet but it's part of state inspection but most shops don't check for that, most people just bypass the pump with a shorter belt and leave the pump on the car so it's there if they have to put the belt back on for inspection.

so if i were to run a shorter belt and take off the smog pump. would it be hard to put it back on for the inspection....to clean up the engine bay some.

i believe it could have some harmful side effects on the cats. or have you all taken care of those too? :)

well, I ripped mine off, plugged the line to the back of the heads and of course shortened the belt. I did this before I did my exhaust(off-road x), and it had no bad side effects. it shortens the belt and along with less drag, it make a large difference considering. you are dropping weight and "freeing up" horsepower. (think of a pony pulling that pump around, it would slow it down)

if you have an off road pipe then it doesn't matter about the smog pump.
yep, that is what i was getting at with my above post.

otherwise, i would be afraid of not having oxygen instilled into the cats, allowing them to clog up/burn out.

I took my smog off because the person before me put the exhaust on. They left the air pump tube open and not going into the exhaust. So when the car would idel you would hear a "bbbbrrrrr" sound from under the car. I just took the pump off and left all the other hardware on.
