Wheel Size questions

Heyas-

I have an 88 GT and I'm potentially getting my hands on some Cobra R rims, and due to costs I'd like to stay at 17". Currently, my stock-sized tires on the turbines rub at full lock for some reason on both sides, I can't help but think that this isn't normal. I'm just curious at to what the maximum width I can install in the front/rear on a 17" by 9" wheel without any suspension modifications or anything (money is tight for this project). What is the best sidewall width I could use? I'm looking for decent all-around performance, these tires will mostly be used for street duty and any encounters that may ensue therein

What size tires do you have now?

If your running 255's or even 275's, they could rub. The car came stock with 225's. So I would try that size, even if you have to buy used ones, and see if that eliminates your rubbing.

I run 255 all around.
