Mike, I know when I did this I had to find similar year, make, model, options and mileage had to be close in either or both directions. I however did not need to show what they ended up selling for, or need vin numbers. I guess when you have a car like an old fox you really can have anything from a $500 hooptie to a $15,000 show car. It sounds to me like they will do anything in their power to give you book value.
Sorry about the misfortune, but trying to find a few close mileage, 88 GTs in CA that have sold recently is going to be near impossible!

How do you print and locate on E-bay those cars that sold with the prices on them? All of them so far have been the cars that are for sale.
Kinda why i need to set up an appointment to have my car appraised. If anything happens, i don't want the insurance company to cut me a check for $1200. I'd be pissed.
I'm not saying it's a $10K car by any means, but i want real world value, and maybe a little extra for my mods. If i could get agreed value for maybe $6-7K i'd be happy.

How many miles does your car have?? If you can't find any in CA, can't you look in other states? It is a 21-year old car, not like they pop up for sale every single day. Sure they made 68000 of them, but 21 years is a long time, half are prob in the junkyard by now and 1/4 are on their way there soon.
I agree but who will do the appraising? Will you hire an appraiser? How much does that cost? Maybe it is worth the $$ for me to do this if it is acceptible to insurance company.
I do wonder if this car will ever go up in value or become a classic.

I asked my insurance agent first if they had any recommended auto appraisers and got a list there. I have yet to make an appointment with any as i'm still cleaning some stuff up and getting my receipts together.
Only true way the car will go up in value is if it's extremely low mileage or a special model (saleen, cobra, etc). Even 60's Mustangs can be had in good shape for under $20K, so i can't see the plain jane 5.0 mustang ever really skyrocketing up in value anytime soon. Most clean 70-130K mile Mustangs fall in the $3500-5500 range....ie most of the cars on this board.

Sorry i couldn't really help you out much further. But after everything is said and done, definitely look into agreed value insurance coverage with an appraisal. I am not even sure if CA has that though, but it's the way to go, esp when book value on our cars is so low compared to true market value.

Yes, basically the insurance values the car as the value the appraiser deems it's worth. You have to ask and find out if they do it first though
