Which tranny would you get?

Which would you choose?

The TKO600 is the latest version of the Tremec TKO. It's rated at 600 ft-lbs. There is also the TKO500, which is the latest version of the Tremec 3550, rated at 500 ft-lbs. Since the TKO600 is basically the same price as the TKO500, I'm not sure why anyone would get the 500...

I am a cheap bastard so I'd go with whatever was cheaper unless the T56 wasn't that much more.
I'm a cheap bastard too :D. The T56 costs a couple hundred bucks more than the TKO600. I think it would be cool to have the extra gear between 4th and 6th, but not sure if it really has a practical value.

On a stock GT, i'd get the TKO 600. You aren't making nearly enough power yet to take advantage of the T-56's gear ratios. You'd actually be slower
"Stock" is a joke :D. And I'm planning ahead -- even if my T-5 weren't already coming apart, I am planning to make more than enough power next year to take care of it for good.

You are already spending two grand so a couple hundred is just chump change. Do it right the first time and you will be happier down the road.

What are the gear ratios for both transmissions. That will tell the tale.

What do you trap at in the quarter? Will you need to change your rear end gears for either or both of the transmissions.

If the 6th gear is really really low, then it would definately justify having the 6th gear for highway, and 5th for street cruising. But if the 6th gear is near .64 like the T-5, & the TKO's 5th gear is near .64, then there is no point for having the extra gear.

TKO600 gear ratios:
2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.10, 0.68

For comparison, TKO500 gear ratios:
3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.10, 0.68

T56 gear ratios:
2.97, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, 0.80, 0.62

For comparison, T5 gear ratios:
3.35, 1.93, 1.33, 1.00, 0.68

So the T56 is a little taller in the final gear, but the "extra" gear is really 5th. I currently trap at 105, though once I figure out what's wrong with my setup I expect to bump that a little bit, perhaps to 110. But when I do my power upgrade, I want 125.

all i know, is that if the t56 has a higher gear, that means i can run a higher rear-end gear and still cruse at the same highway speed, like maby i coudl have 4:10's and it would stay at the same rpm as my 3:73's on the highway. so this would make the car faster(if re-geared)... right?

Do people shift into fifth gear at the track with a 6spd?
Shouldn't, unless you are making sick power. I cross the line in 4th, and it's 1.00 on both the T56 and the T5 I have now.

Edit: With the 3.73's, I would have to trap above 128 mph to require shifting out of 4th.

Changing the final overdrive to 0.62 and running 4.10's would give you similar results to running a 0.68 final overdrive with 3.73's. Not exact, but in the ballpark.

The question si really quite a bit more complex than that, though. You need to figure how the transmission gearing interacts with the differential gearing. They work together to produce an overall ratio at the wheels. I would not assume that numerically shorter gears are always faster.

Hmmm. 128 is pretty high for a street car. Maybe the TKO600 is the way to go...How much cheaper is the TKO?
