Who has got an intake ready to install...

looking at these numbers the head to intake ports are roughly the same size on the explorer/stock intakes. I always thought the explorer/gt40 lower would have bigger ports, I guess there is just less material from the top of the runner to the bottom of the port and that makes it look larger. my crystal ball says Tmoss will be along anytime now. I bet he loves the metric system too.

Hey David,

Since the motor is not fully back together yet here are some GT40 #s.

Top is 42mm or 1 21/32"

Bottom

Across: 25mm or 31/32"

Length: 48mm or 1 7/8"

I measured a few different ones and all were the same as far as the openings.

AHA!! another non canadian using the metric system!!!
wow, I would have thought the lower castings for the explorer/gt40 would have been siamese twins, but the gt40 has ports 1.5 times bigger.

Thanks Mike Are you going to get that thing running before Spring gets here? Do you know the average runner length of the GT-40 intake?

So we have measurements for a stock intake, explorer intake, and GT-40 intake.

Anyone else care to add to the list?

On a side note, has anyone ever measured the volume of one of their runners?

I think it would be pretty cool to get some average cross section numbers for the intakes. Just need runner lengths (which I have) and the volume of the runner in cubic centimeters.

No it probably won't be running by spring. My hope is by fall, I would like to take it up to Springfield in September for the Street Machine Nationals. My wife tends to get me side tracked on home improvement projects and I haven't had much time to work on the car. Engine Bay is in the process of filling and painting and I am saving up for the turbo, so I can have it all in at the same time. As spring approaches even that time line is ambitious.

Did you want the length of the lower intake runners or the upper? I will measure them when I get home, which may be awhile since all the stupid people are out because of the ice.

I would be interested in seeing the numbers from a truck lower. I hear the runners are much bigger than a stock HO intake.

This can not be right. I didn't think it was so I googled "GT40 vs explorer intake" b/c I wanted to see a side by side. But I found this. Look at the dyno chart, then this is what Tmoss himself wrote on allfordmustangs "Gt40/Cobra/Explorer all flow within a couple of cfm of each other - and if you've seen that old 1996 test on Eddelbrock's website - don't believe it as it has been proven wrong over and over and over......"

Somebody's measuring method is flawed here.

Somebody's measuring method is flawed here.

After looking at the numbers I am questioning it myself, as I have seen that article before too. Althought we are also just talking about the lower as that article refers to the horse power and torque numbers which include top and bottom. Which to me even though they look alike, I have a hard time believing the runners are the same length and size.

I will measure again on several different runners this evening to double check. I am interested in this as well.

We are getting some good feedback

Mike, the actual runner length should begin just a little ways into the upper intake (from the bottom). That should be a shorter measurement because the runner length begins in the upper intake where the air leaves the open plenum.

Then you add the actual lower intake runner length, which should be longer.

On each of the measurements use tight string (no stretch) or tape to get the short and long sides and then average them together.

My guess is that the GT-40 intake is 15 or so inches.

The best place to measure easily should be the very top of the runner where the upper meets, and the very bottom of the runner where it meets the head so we can have a little bit of consistency. I will get all these measurements together at a later time.

So has anyone ever measured a runner volume?

I used a tape measure nothing fancy.I measured again and got the same answers.

Hey, do you think you can just measure the lower intakes of your stock intake and the lower intake on the explorer.

You just measure the short side and the long side, then average them.

Absolutely

If you can just get the most accurate measurements you can at one of the middle/end runners, for the port entrance and port exit.

I think the entire runner length (upper plus lower) is 11". Can you also get just the lower intake runner length?

My bad, I am looking for the LENGTH of just the lower intake runners. You measure from the top of a runner through the intake and out the bottom to the end of that port.

You do that on the short side and the long side, and then average them

It could be 10" or so, no telling.

I love the metric system as well.

I'm an engineer, and the metric system is just so much easier to use.

I do most of my designs and measurements in cm/mm if i can get away with it.

i'll do it tomorrow, but the lower is already bolted to the motor. the thing JUST barely cleared my hood. i might need it milled the tiniest bit.

Ok David, I think I did the measuring as you were asking. Follow along with my math and we will see.

Lower GT 40 I measured last night and checked again today measuring 4 runners all the same.

Top opening is 42mm or 1 21/32"

Bottom Port:

Across: 25mm or 31/32"

Length: 48mm or 1 7/8"

Length of Lower runner 127mm or 5" that is an average and it was consistent on different runners.

Upper GT 40 :

From the open plenum to the bottom where the upper meets the lower.

Top measurement 254mm or 10"
Bottom measurement 186mm or 7 11/32"

Average for Upper GT40 runnner is 220mm

Add the Upper runner lenght 220mm and lower runner length 127mm and that is 347mm or 13.66"

So yes it is close to the 15" you guessed. Let me know if you need something different.
