Build Thread '83 T-top Coupe - Welding Holes in My Rear

I finished stripping the paint off of the deck lid. That sucker had been painted five times. I sanded down the jamb side and the fender also and went through the etch/primer routine to get them safe from rust and prepare for their repairs.

This fender is a little bit better than the left fender as a starting point. It'll still need to be mudded across the top though.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have enough time to finish the finish blocking on the left fender and shoot it, idk though, I've got two big paint jobs to get done.

I'm trying to sweet talk someone with keys to let me in the shop on Saturday. I would like to spend the day and get all the bodywork done on the decklid and right fender. Lots of work to be done to that decklid. It has a bunch of little dents that I can mostly pull out. The problem child is in the center of the lid, it looks like someone slammed the trunk on a suitcase handle.

I'll need to shrink the metal some. I'll probably just use a shrinking hammer and a dolly for the worst part. Regardless of that, I'll probably need to put a skin coat of glaze across the entire surface.

I need to get these new panels finished. Next week I want to pick up the hood and rear bumper. I won't have time if I'm still working on the fender and decklid. So here's hoping that someone will let me in on Saturday.

I had to do today what I advised others concerning the bodywork on a car. after looking at the decklid after I primered it, I had to remember that this is the only decklid I have to work on. Not ten more! It works adjusting your thoughts like that. I want this car to be slick!

BTW, not one spot of rot on this decklid, that's something for a 33 year old part.

If I have time to get stuff done tomorrow, I'll post a picture.

Soooooo, dead weekend. I couldn't convince anyone to come in to the shop to let me in.

I didn't have a chance to paint the left fender yesterday. My wife accidentally ate a peanut at about 4:00 (she's deathly allergic to them), so I got to enjoy the comforts of the emergency room last night. I would have shot the fender after normal work hours last night. Oh well.....

Bright side is that the fender is straight as can be. I can't wait to see it shiny! The top is so smooth and not one ripple in it.

I did get the front bumper dropped off with the blasters at lunchtime though. I'm real curious how this turns out.

I really want to get after the deck lid though. It has probably 30 or so small dents that I'll need to pull out, I told you already about the big outy dent in the middle.

If it matters to y'all how I'll get this stuff straight, I'll basically do a grid. Meaning I'll break the lid down into about six smaller squares and then focus completely on each square pulling out every dent. It's easier for me to stay focused this way. Once all the metal work is done, then I'll look at the bigger overall picture with the mud stage.

I really, really dig this sht guys. It may sound crazy to you, but I'm excited about working on each panel.

So, while I'll be sitting here with my thumb up my butt this weekend, I will be reading more and more about that little V6. There is a possibility I will have to change the head gaskets on it. I don't think it will be any different than a V8, so easy peasy if it needs to be done, I'm thinking.

No, I won't bore and stroke the little motor, btw. But there may eventually be an attempt to see just what the little guy can take before Robby's eventual drivetrain updates. That's long term stuff there though.

What're y'all doing today?

Oh yeah, picture

I'm hoping to finish up the air distribution system I started building last weekend for the new compressor I got. Got switched to 2nd shift (again) this week and haven't found my rhythm yet to actually be able to do anything before work

Just curious, but how worried are you about panel alignment doing this car in pieces like you are and not at least mocking it all up or blocking it all together? I don't think I've ever seen a fox (or really any older car) that didn't need some adjustment to get all the panels straight to each other and panel gaps even, and given the obvious care that's going into the paint its got me wondering.

My wife and I were talking about riding out to the beach this evening and doing some beach combing together. She's got this big jar full of little shells and ornate glass she's found she wants to add to. There's a little bistro that's fairly new she's been wanting to try that has a lot of different wines you can sample we may hit before that..

I do have a little concern about fitment, I'll show what I do when I get to that stage. it really won't be that tough.

The body is square, that's the important first check btw. So, really, I'll just start with the doors and work my way around front. Adjusting (and shimming) as necessary.

Since everything will be off, it's actually easier than fitting in just one new panel.

Got any pictures of the plumbing you're doing? That's interesting to me.

We normally go to OKC or Dallas to visit family most weekends, but we're relaxing at home for the next few weeks. Wife is currently out with the little girl hitting up hobby lobby for oil paints and other things (my wife is, I think, an accomplished little artist).

I'm relaxing here at the house while the boy is watching cartoons. I plan to do absolutely nothing today. Been sick the last two weeks with what I think is a respiratory infection that started on the first of this month! Fever only lasted about three days, but I've been dealing with a bad cough ever since. Lungs are filled with gunk that I'm slowly but surely getting rid of. Hopefully I feel better by Monday. There's an air show at the base this weekend, so we'll be checking that out tomorrow. The thunder chickens are performing.

I'm glad you're getting better.

I've been a bum myself. As usual, I get sidetracked. I was reading about the V6, next thing you know I'm researching compound boost on the poor little bastard!

I borrowed a friend's cheap 110v welder to add Roush axle back mufflers on the ass of the Charger, I mean my new to me ship setting sail. ;) I also have speakers to replace, and need to take it for a test drive and fine tune my transmission controller. In stock form, the car shifts very smooth and boringly (if that is a word...). I bought a controller that lets me manually shift through the volume +/- buttons on the steering wheel, adjust shift firmness for both up and down shifts, scale it to throttle position, etc. I want to feel the 425 hp/420 tq damn it! Also, glad to hear/assume all is well with the wifey since you are back home from the ER. May not be your favorite person in the world anymore, but obviously you care enough that you dont want anything bad to happen to her.

see if you can find the intake manifold for a super Coupe I have the intercooler pipes and intercooler
There you go Dave @Davedacarpainter ,....Get yourself an Eaton M90 and get Steve's stuff and put a factory supercharger on your existing turd. T-Bird SC made like 215hp, and 315 ftlbs tq. through OEM stuff at OEM boost levels.

Ported heads,....some aftermarket cam,...better exhaust,....ported blower (Ask Steve how to do that)

300/400 maybe?????

Or a turbo,..into the blower.......just think what you may be able to do w/ 3.8 liters...

theres a guy around here with a 2004 3.9l (same as the 3.8 with a touch more stroke) mustang with a nitrous kick that runs low 12's/high 11's. says its only like a 100-150hp hit (yeah, i believe that  ). it's gutted, but still impressive.
