This is my first post on stangnet I hope some one can help.
I just got a 99 GT auto , i'm new at this Mustang thing, I just would like to know how much it would take to get in the 12's with out putting on a turbo or supercharger. I know it will take a lot but I just want to get started in the right direction. Thanks

bbk cold air intake

Go to the track every weekend and first start getting flat 14s. That's step 1.

The key to getting good scores is mastering your car, moreso than it is modifying it.

After that, I'd say some gears, some intake and exhaust work, perhaps some internal upgrades (camshafts)...and 12s shouldn't be too difficult.

Three options and they all include standard bolt ons.

First:
Suspension, stall, slicks and gears

Second:
Power adder, stall and sticky tires.

Third:
heads, cams, stall, gears and sticky tires

Pick your poison.

I've got to agree with gearbanger. A small shot of nitrous works wonders. It's not magic but it is a helluva bang for the buck. On top of the n2o just hone your driving skills, get some sticky tires and maybe a set of gears and the 12s will be within your grasp. And yeah the weight reduction helps alot too. If I remember correctly every 100lbs you lose is like adding 10hp and every 10hp is worth .1 seconds through the quarter. I'm not positive on these numbers, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

First off the vert is not the lightest car on the market for sure. So some weight reduction that you can do will work. Back seat out, spare.jack out etc. With being an auto you will need a good stall converter, and get an alum. driveshaft. You said you have 4.10's already. Get some adj. upper control arms and some lower control arms. Sub frame connectors. Put a tubular k-member in the front along with some drag shocks/struts all the way around. Stock springs should work fine. Get some Big and Skinnies for the track with slicks for sure.

Mods:
Long Tubes, Mid Pipe, Catback, UDP, Intake Plenum and TB, a good set of cams, and a good tune. That should do it! Good luck!!!!!

What do you call a small shot. I would say he will need between 75 HP and 100 HP shot depending on what else he does and how traction is. I use every 100lbs you lose is worth .1 second

First off--get your automatic shifting better by doing a jmod or similar kit to it, along with a transmission cooler. Get a quality 3800 torque converter. You will thank me later for the torque converter;one of the best mods for the auto.

Get all of the extra weight out of the car;your convert already weighs more than a coupe so every bit you are able to remove will need to be gone.

Have you considered long tubes? Great mod and now you can purchase "cheaper" brands easily for under $300 though be advised that the install is a PITA though would be great if you managed to find a tubular k/a arms to install at the same time. I have seen kits go for 200 so just look around and you'll be able to find one.

I say if you don't feel like a stroker kit there's always naws. You can also port your heads, switch your cams and rework your whole suspension and a stall converter.

Other than that your going to have to do all the small things such as full exhaust, intake, timing adjust, and some rear end gears. Some good tires (IDK if you only want 12s on street tires or not) and of course the driver mod. Though, I don't think there's too much to learn in an auto.

My old 04 GT (when it was N/A) went 12.76 @ 108.8 with nitto DRs on 15s, tubular K, boltons, and VT stg 1 cams. I had a crap 60' too...was like 1.86.

I dont know why everyone is talking about blowers, stroker kits, and heads. Thats far from needed to go 12s...even in a vert. And with the auto with a stall, it will be MUCH easier to get 12s as long as your on DRs.

I say 75-100 should do the trick. When you go much over 100 on a stock motor it starts to get a little risky. I would not go over 125 maybe 150 if you want to push it without having the internal components to support it.
