I'll say this about that.

It's no freakin wonder why they are justifying positions like this. On one hand, the complexity built into the cars can be seen as a plethora of " ticking time bombs", just waiting to blow some future owners' pockets completely off their pants when it goes bad out of warranty,

That's why they make good LS swap cars after 10-15 years. Not worth the upkeep

Shhh :ninja: You never know when there might be a Bimmer Ninja watching my "social media" profile to see if I am not keeping in line with expectations.

Volvo 240's any old XJ6/8's, and even a dead 3 series BMW would all be ripe to have a US engine dropped in place of the 4/6 that used to be there.

As rabid as some ford guys are about keeping everything all blue,....I'd bet you get shot showing up at a cars and coffee with an old M3 wearing a windsor.

Now that I think of it...:chin.....sounds like it's right up my alley..

On another note,..today is my day off. It will always be. It'll be the only day I have to accomplish anything, short of pulling a Dave, and going down there at 5AM every day and working till 8 then showering and going to 9 hours at BMW..................................
Naaahhh, that'll only happen when the car is so close to being done That I cant wait. Until then,..it's gonna have to lope along like beaky buzzard.

On on that note, I'm gonna focus on the oil cooler shroud and front end body work. It's supposed to rain all day,..I cant have the door open,...so I'll just have to sit-n-sand.

:crap:

:stick:, anything new?.......Helloooooo.......
Yes Dave,....but it fits under the mundane. Thursday was my day off last week. It rained. I still attempted to force the oil cooler shroud to dry so I could wetsand the primer, and ended up cutting huge gouges out of it w/ 400 in areas that weren't dry enough.

So I made more work for myself on something that should've been close to painting.

I'm off again today. It's raining. It's Easter. I'll only be able to get away with a few hours at most.

I've decided that if anything is gonna move forward I'm gonna have to pull a "reverse Dave", and spend a few hours here and there at the tail of the day during the week. Now that the days are way longer, and much warmer, I'll be able to sneak in the time I need to get it done.

I know that if you looked at the car as a whole you'd probably see two-three days of prep standing in the way of actually contemplating paint. That's YOU I'm talking about now.....As for me,....... it's weeks.

I decided that the other door panel, and the door bar completion could wait until after paint to get addressed. The reasoning being the door has to hang exactly where it's gonna be in order to match the door bar perfectly to that dash. So, that brings me back around to prepping for paint.

The body itself is soo close. But I need to spend a few hours stripping the lower rockers, rattle can spot prime them. Finish welding some small spots on the passenger G gill, spot prime it. Then the entire body will be ready to contemplate a total priming for the blocking phase. That's actually how close I am. I still have some rough work on the fenders. I still have to deal with the hood. The doors are done, They need their insides sanded and primed, and the outsides primed and blocked.

I drilled and "staked" the front hinges. Hopefully, when It comes time to reinstall the doors (which I've decided to paint off the car) the holes that I've drilled will allow me to put the hinges back and the doors back where they'll line up perfectly.

My garage is too small to contemplate doing the body work that's left on the fenders but again,..that wouldn't/couldn't happen today anyway. But,.I could get the body damn close to priming,.... which could be next Thursday.

Right on man, it's a relief to get to the priming stage, isn't it?

You want to come here and tell my wife that I'm gonna go dick off downstairs on the only day we have together?
Considering how supportive your wife has been in respect to your hobby, by all means make this her day... Ask her"Where do you want to go dear, what do you want to do?"

swap a coyote in a blown up m3. For the price of replacing/overhauling the BMW engine I'm sure a jy f150 coyote could find its way under the hood.

I guess I need to start this by giving recognition to the wife. She made today's dinner, did some laundry, bought the three tickets to the 3:30 showing of Superman vs Batman, and still allowed me a couple of hours in the garage.

The dinner was great,...Now I got clean clothes for the week, and Who in their right mind would take on Superman? The movie was better than Starwars (which just plain sucked) but I got a problem with the premise. Why Batman had such a hard on to kill Superman was just dumb......Other than getting over that hurdle,It was ok.....For a Super hero movie anyway.

I said earlier today that I needed to do a few things so that I could move the car on to a point where I could entertain/consider masking the whole thing up and blasting it with three coats of 2k.

In the two hours I had, this is what I did:

The oil cooler shroud and the front bumper wearing their third coat of rattle can high build. The shroud has some wonkiness to it, but I'm thinkin that that is just gonna have to do. It sits beneath the front bumper, and will be so low that you'd literally have to get on the ground to critique it. I'm thinkin' I'm calling that dude done after this round of blocking. I sagged the primer on the front bumper, but it's still got it's blocking to be done as well. The same as the shroud, if it looks good after all the wet sanding is done,...it's gonna get hung somewhere safe.

The holes you see are my locators. All four hinges are now "staked" so I can remove the doors for paint.

Both rockers,...devoid of paint. That was no simple process. The plan to remove that paint started w/80 grit on a D/A sander. After a couple minutes of that, it became apparent that going that route was gonna take more time than I wanted it to,..(and remember,..I only had a couple of hours). I put a wire wheel on the 4.5" grinder and started down that path.
It would've been the right path, had the wire wheel NOT came from HF. For whatever reason, the wires in the wire wheel became lopsided, and the vibration that came as a result of that was just plain dangerous. Had I not had a serious glove on my right hand, there would be a significant amount of missing skin on top of my right hand as a direct result of using that junk.

That forced option 3 into play: A propane torch, and a hand held wire brush.

That option made quick work of the whole deal, but I also managed to put two small warps in each of the bottoms of the rockers because of the heat. It occurred in the same places on both sides, so there must be some structure underneath at those locations that makes it susceptible to warpage there. Again,...very bottom of the underside of the rockers, You're gonna have to lay down to see that, and when the car is at ride height,......Aint happenin'. But in the pic that has the lighting in front, you can see the warps big as hell,....I just gotta see if they can be seen from standing, and whether they affect the crown of the rocker.

So,.....where does this leave me? It puts me in a place where I have a bunch of small pieces that need orange paint on them:

The front bumper and the shroud. The grille surround, and the head light bezels, The hinges and the door handles, And the G hole. The front bumper could be painted, and the shroud could be bolted on permanently. Since the fenders basically "cap" the bumper at the ends, and since I intend to paint them off the car as well, making the bumper permanent will work. By painting all of the other small pieces that you'd ordinarily have to chase down last,.... first, I'm thinking piddly little shi t out of the way.

What say you to that one @Davedacarpainter ?
