I can think of several times I wish I had abs. Makes steering much easiervwhen braking hard

Jim

From what ive read n this thread so far, driving it cautiously probably isn’t going to happen. Maybe you’ve never had a sphincter- tightening experience when traffic stops suddenly, but I sure have. Maybe you’re just a better driver than I am. My 85 gives me some real adrenaline rushes when I have to stop quickly. Maybe it’s a waste of money in your eyes, but to me it would be money well-spent if it kept my car out of an accident even once

Jim

You need the driver mod. :D

Annnnd...........along with more power comes the inevitable....

We got parts breakage.

Today I drive the thing to lunch. ( After driving it to work).

As I'm driving along, I hear a really loud "BAM!" under the car. I'm thinking WTF is that?...could it be I hit something, or did a driveshaft bolt come loose and fling itself against the floor?......

I continued to my lunch destination, (Dairy Queen,...5 buck lunch w/ drink and small sundae of choice)... I sit outside, eating my 5 buck lunch looking at the car,..lookin for signs of a phck up,...I get nothin.

I return to work, nothin is makin noise,...pissn, or moanin....I think it must've been a fluke.

Until the SVC mgr grabs me at about 5 PM and says " Hey, you know that you got something pouring out from under your car?"

Ohhh phck.....where at? I ask...." All the way at the back" he replies..

I check it.

Gear oil..madly dripping out from under the car...right at the cover plate sealing surface.

It's late....I can't risk driving the car in the dark with a potentially empty rear end housing...
I have to leave it at BMW.

I'm gonna guess that I've broken a differential cap, and the resulting carnage has broken ( cracked) the rear end housing center section.....( which is a really, really really bad thing....) The rear end is narrowed, and has shock mounts welded in place of the stock mount points....it's not like I'll run right out and get me some JB weld to fix this.
This time the fix here is gonna be a complete do over if it's broken.

You do have to remember that I have car Munchausens disease....I make things worse than they actually are...
But what else could've happened to cause the housing to leak like a btch after making a giant bang noise like mine did?

Oh gosh, the dreaded Six Thinking Hats Edward de Bono system.....

Straight off, I'm like using my Chicken Maaaaan Voice....Meanwhile, the "Six Fingered" interbred Ford six with too high compression ratio and cast iron conrods and custom external water and and oiling systems still lives to see another day.

Then I'm like Mike, if you'd just left it at 99 hp, you wouldn't have broken the 8.8"...

And then You wanna go to the Poor Mans 3 link now?

Tick option Four....

Sorry Mike. Sh!+.......

How the ****? You run a reinforced cap don't you?
Don't be rediculous....that always seemed an unnecessary cosmetic upgrade on a non-sticky tire/non-drag raced application to me. ( obviously, considering my potential power level,.....I might have to re-think that)

I've been looking around the web this morning to see how common it is for a rear end break with symptoms like mine, so I can say " yep,...that's what happened right there". But no real instances of that. So I'm walking uncommon ground this morning.

Something "inside" tried to get "outside" is what I'm thinkin...Since it didn't make anymore noise after the loud bang, since the diff was leaking so badly, and since the cover plate is only the stock, cheesy-thin piece of steel?..
I'm thinkin the piece that was inside actually got outside...

That's my best case scenario...a loose ring gear bolt that got spit out maybe. It wasn't noisy on the drive back, and I'd imagine that if I broke a differential cap, the whole gear carrier would have moved enough to cause the gears to go ape-sht noise wise...I have no clue until I get to work...Where I should have a significant puddle of gear oil ( the one automotive fluid that never seems to stop stinking) in a BMW service bay........that I'll have to clean up......in my work clothes.

Yeah but I can't run right down to AZ to get a new one,....I have to order my replacement from Cometic, where they have my template for a new one...

Nothing's changed...whatever's wrong with the rear end will get fixed ( one way or the other). Next will come the injectors, then the water meth, then the tune to take advantage of all of that.

Then the monster starts eating.

Man I tell ya...the monster should be a cat.

Cause he's got 9 lives.

What's that look like to you?

Its one of the 10 ring gear bolts that were all on their way to falling out.
20171111_090457.webp

They were all loose, several had fallen out, and laying in the bottom of the housing...one of them got picked up and flung at the cover so hard, it punched a hole clean through the cover.
One of them is still unaccounted for...
( it likely never was installed)
For the last month, the rear end has been clanking when I'd put it into gear...Now I know why.

Two holes are gonna have to stay empty for tiday...one bolts threads were trashed..its very possible that the ring gears threads are the same.

It'll get me home tonight, and that's all that matters..ill obviously have to put new bolts in when I get him back home safe...ill consider rebuilding the Tloc, and adding a cover w/bearing cap support at that time too.

So...one more life down... That puts me down to about 3 left.
