$2800 paint job now $3900

Well Yesterday the shop doing my paint called me and let me know that they had found a considerable chunk of surface rust. They suggested poping out front and rear windshields, shelby side windows, all trim pieces etc and taking the bastard down to bare metal. So..... Another 1100 and another 10 days. So the waiting goes on. DAMN, ****, DAMN, POO POO, CA CA, TI TI, DOO DOO!

Aww, that sucks man. You are a victim of your own thoroughness. Just tell them to knock off the big chunks of rust, and spray away.

thats the way it goes dude....even though surface rust-by definition-is clearly visible as its on the surface. Its good to hear that they will be disassembling the body further, makes for an overall cleaner and longer lasting paint job. So long as you have the money, let it roll. I'd probably stop by the shop a few times during the process to make sure that they are doing all they're charging you for.

Ah, the $2800 quote was too good to be true. If they are only charging another $1100 to take the car to bare metal, body work, removed front and rear glass, thats not bad at all. They should be removing the glass and all of the trim anyway before they paint. I am assuming they are taking the whole car down to bare metal to make sure it isnt rusted in other spots? Dont be surprised if they call and raise the price again if they find more rust and have to start replacing panels and what not.

I can really relate to your situation. In November '02 I started to do the body part of my clone. I had spent the previous year buying all the fiberglass parts needed to build a '67 Shelby clone, so even though I'd never painted a car before and I'm painting this one, I figured I could have it done by the following summer. Since I'm doing a color change (to what color I don't know) I knew I needed to do the jambs, which meant removing the doors. The windows needed to come out anyway to redo the headliner, so out they came. To get the shelby roof scoops on, the rear seat as well as all the rear plastic and fiberglass interior panels have to come out.To really get the front of the door jambs, the front fenders need to come off. Once I got that far, I figured I may as well get the motor out and detail the engine bay. To get the engine bay right, the master cylinder, steering column, steering box and all the arms need to come out, as does all the wiring and brake lines. So gues what? now I have a bare shell of what once was a nice clean fastback in my garage. I had to buy shelves to store everything, and my wife still can't believe that it had to come this far apart "just for paint".

Yeah, they're taking the whole car down to metal just to look for additional problem. Scarey what they have found under there. I've already been by the shop twice since the price increase and they are working away striping my baby naked. At the very least, it should look pretty good. I"m going to my local mustang shop today to see what new trip pieces would cost. I think it's going to scare me away. I'm already poping for new handles, marker lights, trunk "key hole" bezzel, rear turn signals..... Plus my new wheels (vintage 45's) have arrived and are now wearing khumo 712's, just waiting for a car to go on. Should be an ok (though not show quality) looking fastback.

Sucks that is is gonna cost more and take longer, but it's better to pay now then to pay later when your paint starts bubbling up.

Body Work

I understand completely. My current project started out as a quick brake job on a beater to make it roadworthy.
About 10K later........

Anyway - I am almost done and have the car I always wanted. Take your time and don't cut any corners.

well, I'm suppose to pick up the stang today. Wearing my shelby baseball cap and everything. I went down on Friday to pick it up and let them know that they needed to square away a couple of little things before I would drive it off their property. They assured me they would be fixed this morning.

There was an additional 180 tacked onto the bill for some work they sourced out. I felt I was a bit mislead by the people I talked to about this. Could have been a misunderstanding, but I was pretty hot.

The owner/manager came up and said, "Eric, if there is anything on this bill you don't think is fair, DON'T PAY IT." We'll write it off. Whatever you think is fair is OK WITH US. Well hell! How do you stay mad at that. Gotta appreciate that attitude in a shop.

They also told me to keep it for 2 weeks, find anything that I think needs to be improved and then bring it back so that they can fix it. I'm sure there will be a fisheye or two, I did see a little overspray on one of my stripes down under the front bumper.

All in all I think I'm going to be pleased.

Just thought I'd share my excitement over getting my car back. I'll try to get some pics up soon!

Wow that IS hard to stay mad at. Heheh.

I can't wait to see the final product. I know it's grown to be a bit pricey, but it sounds like you are getting an amazing final product. If I took mine back because of fisheyes or overspray, my painter would LOL and blow Marlboro smoke in my face.

Picked up the car yesterday and drove it down to get my vintage 45's and kuhmo 712s put on. Love the 17 inch look. Far superior to my 15" craigars I'm going to wait a week or so before I take it in to be cut (wet sanded) and buffed. Several friends have told me it's pretty important to let the paint set up + I want to drive the bastard.

I already have a list of 13 flaws which must be fixed. Some of them are small, some of them I wonder how they missed them. I figure I'll take it in for everything at one time. Once it's tight I'll post pics.

Considering how BUSH LEAGUE the previous owners paint is and how long I drove around with that UGLY ARSE paint, I'm thrilled.
