2Blue2's 1977 Cobra2 Driveway Build

We drug the 289 block out to the driveway and slapped the C4 and starter on it.
Jumped it with jumper cables and wifeys car for compression test. Had the oil pan off.
Looks like crank was hand stamped and says
M10
R10

So this has had the crank turned 10/10
Was reasonable clean inside too.

289 Compression test
Sitting 10 yrs just pulled plugs and did it.

195 - 1 . 5 -215
198 - 2 . 6 - 215
198 - 3 . 7 - 215
202 - 4 . 8 -208
10% spread between low and high.

I think its gonna work!:D:p;) ( Saying a little budget oriented Prayer for it )
Will need serious pre oiling.

Plan is to use the front dress off of original engine so I can use radiator and power steering.
Has driver side inlet on water pump.

So pulling it off

Already has pan swapped off in this pic.

Gunky!
kind of reminding me of a certain oil pan and pickup a couple days ago

Old timing chain vs newer one

One good backfire and it would of jumped a tooth

Getting cleaner and got a new seal to install. There was A LOT of carbon soot.
Only one spot of corrosion there on water pump by passenger side water in let bolt hole

Manifold pretty bad too. Felt need to pull cover off bottom.
Should just get off my cheap ass and go but shiny new edelbrock manifold.
Heat riser port completely blocked chocked with soot. Had to poke it with screw driver.
Almost clean enough now.

you'll have it running next week for sure!! :)

I hope so!
My time off is up, I have to go back too work now. Updates will be slower. At least she is in.
An hour a night or so will get us there. Just want it to run reliably

Anyone tired of the Ford nerd in me geeking on part numbers no one cares about?

The 2 on the thermo housing is upside down.

It was an original unmolested engine...

Automotive Archaeology 101

This manifold has a heat riser port by carb.
Aluminum spacer was rotted above it. Looks to be packed with some crap in an attempt to fix it
.
Changing above statement to 'mostly unmolested'.

DSCF0153.JPG

Tried an earlier spacer but won't cover port

DSCF0154.JPG

I think the heat riser being choked with soot is why it kind of worked?

DSCF0156.JPG

Must of been a hell of an exhaust leak.
Now Ive wasted time on the manifold and I can't use it with what i got.
Whatever just use the 289 one right!?!

What! was that a second vote for a shiny Eldelbrock one.

Hey, you are fast with working on the car. I should perhaps also try to do a "wrenching vacation"... But lets see what my wife thinks.
If you buy a shiny intake, think twice about which one: the high rise intake can lead to hood clearance issues. I still didn't try how my edelbrock RPM intake works with the 2'' drop aircleaner...

Right on sounds like good advice.
I wonder what a 'short' manifold is? Memory says a Weiand stealth from back in the day was a shorty, I think? IDK.

Have a look to my latest post in my build thread. i measured what i have on the car today...
Edelbrock Performer RPM: 4.900 in.
Edelbrock Performer: 4.120 in.
Weiand Street worrior: 4.785 in.
Weiand stealth: 4.970 in.
I've read some that the Stock 4v intake is 1' less height than the weiand stealth (same height if 4v intake with stock 1' spacer is used)

onother idea: make a thin spacer from alu sheet metal?! cheap and fits!?
On my 66 coupe i habe the weianst stealth and thats realy good... But with a Mustang II it's a mess. I will perhaps cut the hood and use a scoop. Self made spacer plate whould be much cheaper and straigh foroword in your case.

I just stuck the 66 2v manifold back on for now, and just gonna dream of new Carbs and manifold for a bit.

And these old finned Valve covers that were in my pile of stuff. Needs new crinkle back spayed on em.
Some one knocked the baffles out so she might be making a mess out the PCV later IDK

Getting close to making it work though.:)

Started cleaning up the exhaust manifolds and y pipe.

Check out that gasket, So fun the use of asbestos in the auto industry.
I don't really know if it is but it tastes like it. (kidding)
I got a new1

Passenger side is honking big!

There that toe again always photobombing my shots.
Had to pull engine mount bolts and jack the engine up and over a wee bit to install passenger side from top finally.
