OK........i have been going back and forth and etc about what motor to build up, i currently have what listed in my sig. And i have a un bored 302 sitting on a stand awaiting to get parts for it.......i WAS going to do a 347.......BUT many have mentioned why not switch to a 351, at the time i was like man i have all these other parts that will swap right over in this and that and blah blah blah............... WELL im at this party and this kid ( good friend of mine) says that his dad has a 351 windsor out of a 70 ranchero that has been sitting on a stand for allmost a year and that i can have it for 200 bucks!!!!!!

Its complete from carb to pan and he sasy it runs strong, just leaks ALOT of oil and needs a rebuild, so my ?'s are these..........What is neccesary to convert a 1970 coupe with a 302 into a 351 windsor, he said hes not sure about internals or anything like that, and what would be a good setup to make this thing a monster??? :spot:

Im picking it up in two weeks (as this friday im blowing about half of my paycheck on a local stangnetters nitrous kit  and cant do it this week)

Just did this swap. It will bolt right in, however here is a list of stuff that won't work. Your intake, distribitor, maybe your headers, oil pan, oil pump drive shaft, and your carb and radiator is going to be too small. If your car has a manual transmission, your z-bar will not longer fit correctly. I maybe forgetting something.

I think you got most of it, maybe add pushrods to that list. Swap headers may or may not be needed, I used them since my old ones were nearly trash, but I have seen guys get 289 headers to fit a 351W in the 67/68s.

Your headers will probably fit on yours there is a lot more room in our engine bays than in the earlier models. If not I can see if I can look up the hooker part number on my headers they fit great and didn't need a lowering bracket at all. See also if you can manage to get yourself an electric fan it will help you with your cooling a good deal.

I haven't gotten the car running yet it really pisses me off. It would have been running a couple weeks ago but I got ripped off on a carburator and had to wait for some final parts to arrive. I will let everyone know when it is up and how she runs. Anyways the compression should be fine but I don't think that will work for you. You need to remember that I am 4000 ft above sea level so i am able to run more compression up here we can run as much as 11.7:1 compression on 91 octane gas. If I were you I wouldn't go above 10.5:1. My goal is to hit 400rwhp but we will see I don't think I will hit it. I will try to help wherever I can let me know.

Nope no power adder. Everything is listed in my sig well my goal was to get as close to 500hp as possible so I can lay a beat down on the WRX's and STI's around here once and for all, but mostly just for the fun of driving it. Hoping the tranny will last me a year or two and then when it blows I will do a G-force upgrade on it. Don't really plan on abusing the tranny much.

Accessory brackets & pulleys could be an issue. Does the 351 include the alternator brackets, crank pulley, water pump pulley, PS brackets, AC..etc? I don't think they are the same as the mounting points for some of these will be higher on the 351. Also, what year is the 302? It the 302 is pre-1970, then it will have a 3 bolt harmonic balancer which affects the pulley used ( must also be 3 bolts. Not insurmountable by any means, but the 351 is a 1970 and will have a 4 bolt balancer. I think they can be interchanged between the two.

The swap is extremely easy with what you have to deal with.
Are you sure the engine is a 70?
If so, that is a very good year for Windsors.
Most everything has been touched on, the W has different intake, distributor, oil pan, and may require different headers than your 302... BUT if memory serves, the 70 Stang uses the same header part number for both 302 and 351w.

As for stroking:
A 347 will not be as durable (without a lot more money) as a 302/351/393.
You should probably get the 70 engine and get a 393 crank for about 3 bills and put in there. This stroker is a great option for a low buck/high power 351.
It uses a new crank that doesn't cost much more than turning/restoring your old crank. Then it uses your stock rods with inexpensive 302 pistons on top.
Done...
393 cubes.
Good luck
Dave

Damn that sounds good for sure, but i plan on hitting it with a nice show of N20

The 351w block (complete from carb to pan) i am getting for 200 bucks, Its is coming out of a 79 ranchero, is BONE STOCK and DOES come with all the brackets and such:)

Be sure to use forged 302 pistons and polish your 351 rods... also use ARP rod bolts.

You won't need many brackets. Maybe the alternator bracket...
I swapped a 302 for a 351c and only needed to mod the PS bracket.
Everything else is pretty flexible between the engine family.

Btw: The heads will make good boat anchors...
