.544 lift with AFR's

Would .544 lift be too much with with afr's stock .550 lift spring's? These are afr165 pedestal mount. Afr said that it's too much and that I'll be wearing my spring's out faster and I should upgrade. Why do they say thier good up to .550 lift then if they can't handle it? I'm concerned about valve float too. I'm only taking it to 5800-6000rpm. Anyone have any problem's with this lift?

Cause it's a roller cam.. the ramp rate is much faster then, say a flat tappet.You will probably valve float at 5500 rpm. Def. upgrade the springs. You'll be glad you did.

A general rule for me is to stay clear of maximums / minimums by 10%.... Just to be on the safe side and hey I am conservative but I haven't dropped a valve yet or blown the pants off any motor that I have built and driven the snot out of.

Get the upgrade...

Yep, especially with AFR's stock springs. I'd get the upgrade no matter even if I was using the stock roller cam.

Definately get the upgrade. People complain about those springs with much less lift than that.

I put together a dss 306 with afr 165 and comp extreme energy cam 545 and 555 and my buddy shifts it at 6000 all day long with no valve float. maybe he just happened to get a good set though.

hey are the springs on the AFR 205's crap too? even just for .560 lift?

if you don't want to spend arm and a leg on springs...Ford Racing makes a set that have a higher spring pressure...135# on the seat unlike the ones from AFR that are 120...the Ford Racing springs can support .600 and they are like $70 form Summit...I have them on my 165's...no probs yet...I also run them on my X heads as well...can't beat the price...I would definatly upgrade the springs...don't cheap out...or else you will pay so much more once you drop a valve...or worse...

Another thing I'm concerned about is if I upgrade my springs I'm running pedestal mount. A local speed shop told me that I could rip them out of there with a higher spring pressure. I know springs are cheap to upgrade but now this speed shop is talking stud conv,springs,pushrod, stud rockers. Could this be another problem?

No. If you were running a solid roller cam, then MAYBE... but highly unlikely. A stud goes in the same hole, and if they don't "rip" out, I wouldn't see how a ped bolt would.

The 205 springs are decent, I assume you mean the .650 soild roller model.

Upgrade the springs for that cam, the stock one tend to be on the weak side. Contact Ed Curtis he has the ones you need on the shelf...

I'd still upgrade them...controlling the movement of the valve is VERY IMPORTANT.

I thought stud mount are supposed to be stronger than pedestal mount. So I wouldn't have a problem pulling them out?

www.flowtechunduction.com has springs that will be a direct repalcement for the AFR's.

It is www.flowtechinduction.com I use a lot of springs from Ed for customers AFR's when matched to one of his cams very nice.
