Soot, or carbon buildup in the carb on the bottom of the butterflies is mostly normal after a lot of miles, black inside the carb throat is usually a sign of many backfires but can be cleaned with carb cleaner while the engine is running.
The adjustment screws being closed (bottomed out) concerns me.
Refresh me on the carb, model, size, new, used or rebuilt.

Holley 80570-2 570 CFM New (a year ago). have a new concern with the thermostat. It seems that it is thicker than the water neck relief and sits above the mounting surface. The fiber gasket can't sit flat on the neck and I wind up with a leak at the bottom of the housing.

I bought a Murray thermostat, which is thinner than the Carquest one. Now my problem is possibly a bent or warped thermostat housing. Gonna install it one more time and if it leaks Ill get a new housing.
