73 Or 76 Maf? Does It Really Matter?

Hi all,
Got a quick ?....

I have a 92 LX 5.0. I have a 73mm and 76mm MAF for 19lbs. Which one should I use? Here more info on my car...pretty simple right now:

Stock: block, heads, cam, injectors
75mm TB
GT40 Tubular intake
BBK CAI

Any suggestions on the 73mm or 76mm?

A 65mm MAF, and 65mm throttle body would be ideal, but out of those two I would go with the 75mm MAF just for a more constant airflow. (though not much)

75mm MAF > 75mm Throttle Body > 65mm Intake

Thanks for the quick replies and for fixing Gearbanger!

They are both FMS parts. Sorry, should have mentioned that.

I was unaware that Ford made a 73 and/or 76mm MAF...? Are you sure you know what you have? Not trying to call you out, just trying to help.

Generally, the bigger the MAF the better, providing it does a good job of metering airflow. A MAF's ability to accurately meter airflow is more a function of it's design (AKA, who makes it) than anything else. That's what the guys are getting at above. I say the bigger the better, because a MAF should add the least amount of resistance to airflow as possible. It's just there to tell your EEC-IV how much wind your engine is breathing, nothing else. I have a 97mm MAF on my car and through tuning and testing I have verified that it does a very good job of metering airflow on my 302.

75mm MAF > 75mm Throttle Body > 65mm Intake

Don't understand this post...?

As others have already said, way too much TB. The intake and heads will only flow so much. Did you reuse the stock TB gasket or the 75MM TB gasket... If you used the gasket for the 75MM TB, did you notice the gasket opening was much larger than the opening in the intake.

Generally, you want the MAF at least as big as the TB. Never heard of those size MAF by FMS. Part #"s? Sure those aren't C&L ?

What dont you understand?

Don't understand what it is you're trying to say. OP has two mass air meters... One he says, is a 73mm and the other is a 76mm. He believes that they are FMS units and asked which he should use... The 76 or the 73.

So not sure what you post was meant to say:

75mm MAF > 75mm Throttle Body > 65mm Intake

I get the 65mm throttle portion... the inlet on the intake that the OP listed is roughly that size so the TB should be. Agreed.

More consistent flow from a 75mm MAF? I don't understand that portion as the size of the meter housing has nothing to do with how consistent the air flow is. The last part... I THINK you're just mapping out what the OP described initially to show the mismatch between the throttle body and the intake but I had to look at it for a while before deciding that, that's what you were trying to say.

+1

EXCEPT

I disagree about a 65mm TB. The GT40 family of intakes will take a 70mm TB all day long, with maybe a very slight bit of port matching. Plus, I know I've said it once or twice before... 65mm TBs are retarded. :p

I'd be of the mindset that if I had a 75mm TB on hand and a GT40 intake, I'd be looking real hard into port matching the intake to fit the 75mm TB... But that's just me. If he ain't got the cojones, that's OK, but I would recommend a 70 for a GT40, not a 65.

Speaking of +1... Put me down as well. IMO 75mm TB is entry level and if you're spending the money on mods then you should be shooting at minimum, for mods that necessitate a 75mm.

Yea after re-reading my post I can totally see how it didnt make since. (it did in my head) lol
But lets see if I can try to clear some of this up...

Yea it should of read something like this... "out of those two I would go with the 76mm MAF just for a more constant matched airflow/mm with the throttle body".

75mm MAF > 75mm Throttle Body > 65mm Intake

The last part... I THINK you're just mapping out what the OP described initially to show the mismatch between the throttle body and the intake but I had to look at it for a while before deciding that, that's what you were trying to say.

Yea I was just "mapping out" a diagram, but I didnt get it right on that one either. lol

<--- noob

So NIKwoaC, if I'm understanding you correctly....I SHOULD GET A 65mm TB? Correct? Just messin man.

So here's the plan that I'm thinking:
use the 76mm MAF with the 75mm TB and then port my GT40 tubular intake to match it.

FYI...I'm not positive of the direction I'm going to go. I'll end up with at least heads and cam. But the reason I'm asking about the 73 vs the 76 is b/c I want to know which one to keep and which one to unload. Someone is actually asking to buy one from me and just wanted to make sure.

Thanks everyone.

I don't think you're going to be able to open that GT40 all the way to 75 MM but you might be able to get close.
close is only going to leave a step for the air to smash into and distort on the way in. I say stick with 70mm and keep it smooth. Most street combo's won't benefit from a throttle body any bigger than that anyway.

Measure out your wall thicknesses and determine what it'll look like after you hog it out to 75. If it looks like you're going to break through a wall, then don't do it (obviously). Remember, it doesn't have to be a straight 75mm diameter cylindrical path into the intake, in fact no intake on the market is shaped that way. The goal is to just get a smooth transition from the throttle body with roughly the same cross sectional area, be it round or kidney bean shaped or whatever.

Here is an option... A spacer like this one (providing you're not running the EGR), can be ported on one end to match the throttle body and ported on the other end to match the intake.

They also make EGR eliminators are like 3/8 inch thick. The same can be done to those considering that we're only talking about 5mm here.

Would make for an easy transition.
