93 Cobra MAF??

I've read alot on this but cannot find a simple answer. I'm looking at purchasing a 70mm Ford Racing MAF, basically the same equipment used on 93 Cobra's. The guy I'm buying from says the meter itself is calibrated to work with 19lb injectors and the computer is what makes up for the calibration change on 93 Cobra's since they came with 24's. If this is true, then will a 93 cobra mass air meter work on my stock injected GT?
 
I am not quite sure, the '93 Cobra had #24's stock but weather it was calibrated through the unit itself or the computer is the question. I was looking at that unit but from Mustangs Unlimited and it said that it was to be used with #24's. Kind of pricy, why not just get a pro-m or C&L? What if you do upgrade, who will reprogram it? Plus, it's smaller than other MAF's. Are you trying to make a Cobra Clone?
 
I've been using a C/L 76 unit for a little while and it seems to make my car run rich plus I've been reading alot about how aftermarket meters that use sample tubes often do give incorrect readings to the comptuter. I can pick up a 70mm Ford unit for fairly cheap and was considering it. I trust Ford equipment and this piece will still work well with my mostly stock motor. No cobra clone, just trying to stay with Ford pieces. :D
 
Yes and no. The Cobra maf is calibrated for 19# injectors and the change to manage the 24's that came on the Cobra's was handled in the Cobra ecu. In that sense it's a bolt on swap. However, the 19# calibration curve/data point set for the Cobra meters is different than the 19# calibration curve/data point set for the HO computers. So while it may seem to work just fine, whether or not it is optimal is a different question. Folks who have recalibrated aftermarket meters face the same issue - most of them just don't know it. You won't be alone however -- the upgrade you're contemplating is commonly done by 5.0 modders, when they can find a Cobra meter.
 
So you're basically saying it's about as risky as using an aftermaket meter? Have any idea on how far off the curve/settings are between the Cobra and GT/LX computers? I can get this meter pretty cheap and already have a C/L, so I'm wondering if it will work really well or have the same impact as an aftermarket meter.
 
If you already have a C&L, are you expecting the Cobra meter will be an improvement? If your car is a stock injected GT, then you'd be MUCH better off focusing your mods on the lower intake manifold - that's the first bottleneck to be remedied. It hinders performance more than the stock maf does.

I feel you need to play with the C&L, some of the Pro-M meters use similar tech to the C&L, our 83mm just came back from recalibration and the sample tube had been opened up by Pro-M.

In my personally expierence the 76mm was a great meter and ran very good. I think you are expecting a little too much from your combo, with another air meter swap.

Down low the EEC uses feedback from the O2's, airmeter, and other sensors to keep the A/F ratio where the factory thinks it should be. The O2's are one of the last sensors the mix sees to make changes, I'd take a look at those first if it is running rich down low.
 
Rick, not expecting a whole lot especially since I'd be going from 76 to 70mm. I just trust Ford equipment and since this is cheap, I am considering it. This is the downfall of owning a low-mileage car.....I worry too much. I do believe my O2's need replaced since the car is slightly over 50K. I was wondering about the 70mm anyways because nobody really seems to be 100% sure of how it works. I've switched back to my stock meter for now just to see if the C/L unit was indeed making it run rich. So far I'm believing it was.
 
Not to hi-jack your thread, but I just bought a 70mm cobra MAF for practically nothing; problem is it doesn't have the little sensor itself bolted on. Where can you purchase these? I was told you can just put on the sensor off the stock MAF, but I will probably be going with 24 lb. injectors later on.
I don't know if it's true that you can use the stock MAF's sensor on the cobra MAF?
