While I was at the shop I asked about programming the chip to reduce timing on a 9psi boost supercharger so that it would run 91 octane gas. He said he would suggest getting a new ignition system that you can change the timing on. Something like MSD...

That is the first I have heard of that. Most everyone says to reprogram the stock chip or buy a programmable chip and burning system.

What kind of side effects would there be in using an after market ignition system versus a programmable chip?

Factory ignition will work just fine. Many 500+ rwhp cars running factory stuff. I wouldn't buy into it.

After making a phone I call I learned that the stock stuff will be just fine. Tim said that his program works great and it has been installed in over 700 motors with all of them still running.

Works for me!
