Alright I know...lots of Questions but heres another ..which gears for 408?

Right now I have 3.90's and that's great for the 306 but going 408 should I put back in my 3.55's? I am a street driver not track, I like to have a first gear and I fry the tires now with the 306. Should I go lower? 3.27? My plans are to eventually go g-force or 6 speed - not sure which. Thanks for your opnions guys. :SNSign:
 
i'm planning on going back to stock 3.27s. it'll be nice to have a speedo that is actually correct. it'll also be nice to turn 2000 rpm at 70mph

OT: what heads, cam, and intake are you going with? decided yet?
 
I think 3.55's might be my speed. I dont know if the 408 is quieter or not than the 306 at that drone speed but the 50 series will help a lot.

Cam wll be ed crowley. Intake - my engine builder will decide. I am not into revving the car way out though..I can at least say that. I mean, like you I want the low end TQ and nice power to 5-5500. I rarely go 6k.

Heads...this is a tough one for me. One guy is running 10's with the same trick flows I have unported. Yes they are on my 306 but the chart says they are for 351's as well. I am doing more research and may have them ported a bit depending on cost...but here is an article with a head that flows a little less than mine and some dyno results..chevy but simlar scenario 383ci:

Since cylinder heads are typically the bottleneck of an induction system, that's where the smart money usually gets spent. This often leads the determined enthusiast to shop through multiple aftermarket cylinder head catalogs until a head that flows big-time air is found for a reasonable price. In 1996, Chevy introduced its Vortec cylinder head on the L31 truck engine and it didn't take long for enthusiasts to bolt them on their engines and find out how good they really are. The cast-iron Vortec heads offer a 170cc LT1-derived port, making them great performance pieces for street engines when tons of torque is key. As the displacement of the engine increases, the torque numbers go through the roof and the horsepower figures follow.
CHP recently bolted a pair of Vortec heads on a 383ci (see "Twister, Part III" on page 96) and made 486 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm and 449 hp at 5,300 rpm. Considering I have a larger engine and a little better flow with my heads, I would be in the same range even unported.

I was around when REAL Big Block Fords were the norm :D

I've owned several of them ... and can say from experience

That rule of thumb about ...........
running a lower (numerical) gear with a big block is true

The simple reason is you got plenty of torque
and
Unlike a small block ... your need for steeper gears isn't as great

Now even though a Stroked Windsor usually doesn't put up
torque values as great as those old big blocks ..........
The difference is not so much as it makes that old rule of thumb void

That horsepower number seems real low. I knew my head and cam where small for the enigine, I din't hink they would be that small?? What do you guys think"
 
Sheesh. Now you have me thinking 3.27's Grady, lol.

The age old Q of ... "What rpm will I turn on the highway"?
is easily determined by any of those math formulas
and
The abundance or lack of torque your motor produces .......
has nothing to do with that decision

You need to factor in your trans type and it's ratios here

But if I was gonna give you a ball park answer

I'd tell you ... speaking stick trans ......... 327's or 355's

If you go auto trans ... I can't help you there.

what i see is a 52mm t/b, and the worst numbers one could hope for from a 383.

that won't happen to you.

if, after you get it together, you are not happy with the heads, then you can swap them out.

i'm now thinking i should have gone with 225s, a victor efi intake, and a XE282 cam. but i'm not changing anything until after the dyno tells its story.

it is getting put together now. with any luck, i will get it back by the end of the month
 
i have looked at those ... note that the price is individual. also note that they are bare. after valves, springs, and retainers and all that stuff, they aren't quite as inexpensive as they might seem. which tfs heads do you have again?

My first SERIOUS car that would make any decent power :)

64 Falcon ... all the hot rod parts available ... at least back then ...
were in place on that little car.

It didn't even get 10 mpg during the week going to school and back

Heck ... When I made a pass down the 1320 ..........

You could noticeably see the gas gauge had moved ... Really :rlaugh:

Back Then ............. Who cared .............
Lowest Octane Grade was less than .25 per gallon :eek: :shock:

Then again ... I was makin $2.00 bux an hour :nice:

That is assembled BV and they are under $1000 total. My trick flows were $1300+.

I have 170cc intake runner and 61cc chamber
sorry ... i thought they were the ones i was looking at before ... my bad.

i actually have a used set like those sitting in my basement ... they were recently rebuilt, are ported, o-ringed, and have springs good to .600 lift ... 3 passes on them since the rebuild. the guy i bought them from said they were on his turbo car that goes 8s. i was going to use them for my 331 buildup. we both know what happened to that ...

Thanks man. :nice: My engine builder is insisting that my trick flows will work very well. I will have to discuss this with him and get back to you shortly. I am not second guessing him but I would like to understand how 170cc heads are going to get me to 400rwhp? He also looked at that cheby example and said that dude's combo was all unmatched.
