Autolite 24's?

I think I have Autolite 24's or 25's not for sure...and was told to gap them to stock gap...(.052-.056) and so I did .054...and I lost 3mph at the track :bang:

3MPH is about 20-30HP. I don't think gapping spark plugs would cause this.

If it is the plugs, you should look at your ignition system. It might not be performing up to spec

Stock Plug gap for the 87+ Mustangs is 0.052" - 0.056" Stock plugs would be Autolite 25's. The 24's are one heat range colder. You still gap them to stock specs.

The only time you really want to close the gap is if you are running nitrous or boost and the spark keeps blowing out. Otherwise, you want to run stock gap.

If you have an upgraded ignition, you could run wider, but not much.

Here is what I did...cleaned the air filter, replaced fuel filter, cleaned IAB and put in new Autolite 24's or 25's???...gapped at .054...and I lost 3mph two days later at the track...

I noticed after that the rpms did not climb as quick in the upper rpms and was confirmed when I went to the track...it acted like the ports on the heads and lower intake got even smaller...know what I mean?...

When you cleaned your air filter, i take it you reoiled it with K&N oil???

If so, did you let it dry completely before putting it back on?

Check the element on your MAF meter. Some oil might have collected on it. It's pretty common after guys freshly reoil their air filters. Get some electronics spray cleaner and clean the wires.

Yeah....I'm with the guy who says that a 20-30hp drop is unlikely. If your car is very stock you should be using autolite 25's....24's shouldn't hurt though. I gap mine @.050 and .035 on the nitrous car. Were the weather and track conditions the same both times at the track? Not all days are created equal. Temp and humidity can make runs vary by .3-.5 at my local track. Time of day....track conditions...lots of factors.

....not likely, but, did you use the right firing order when putting the wires back on? Did you take the dist cap off? If so, is the cap back on securely? Did you have any problems when initially taking the wires off. Sometimes old wires rip/break/seperate when you remove them. Any possiblity ?

I read in a haynes or chilton manual that 85 or 86-89 are .052-.056 and 90-93 are .045...or somethin like that. there was a cutoff year where coil voltage must've dropped or somethin.

Yeah i know what you are talking about. They claim the 86-89 is 0.045 and the 90-93 is 0.052-0.056

They have it wrong. Only the '86 with E6 heads is 0.045". The '87+ is all 0.052-0.056".

On the emmissions label on my '88 (from the factory) it shows to gap the plugs 0.052-0.056
