I am going to be switching an 88 motor to a carb, and I have an 84 donor motor for the swap, but I have never seen what or where exactly the cam eccentric is. As far as I know, I have to use my 84 timing cover, and I have never seen the inside of a carbed timing cover. I know I will have to remove the harmonic balancer for this (do I need a balancer puller/installer, or is there a backyard mechanic way to do this)? Next is, will I have to remove the timing chain/gear, or is the cam eccentric infront of the timing chain, what is the exact process for removing the cam eccentric, or does the 88 motor already have a cam eccentric on it? (I have heard rumors of there already being one on).

i never have used a puller to get the crank pulley and balancer off. the eccentric is actually called the fuel pump ecentric and you really don't need it unless you want to change to a mechanical fuel pump. i would stay electric fuel pump to save all that time. but if you wanna do it, the eccentric is just a round piece that bolts in front of the cam sprocket. you have to change the timing cover to and while you got it apart i would put a new double roller timing set in it.

take the crank bolt out and give it some good tugs. like i said i have never ever used a puller on it but others may have. it only slides on/off one way so you can't go wrong.
