i have had a few ppl tell me to advance my cam timing 4deg. my combo is 96 exp motor rebuilt file fit rings tfs stage 1 cam ported gt40s. exp intake lower ported to go with heads and 1.7 rr 70 mm t body. what do you guys think of advancing the cam timing? also what kinda power do you think it will make? thanks

I think you should call TFS and ask what's already designed into the cam before messing with it.
For example... if TFS already designed 4* adv into it and you go another 4*... I'd think you'd be going backwards as far as performance and may even put too much cylinder psi into your combo (plugs, fuel, ignition).

The best you could do without really tweaking it to death would be just a camshaft degree to specs.

im going to degree it anyways. so if its just straight up should i advance it?

That's a question with a lot of variables which affect the outcome.
If you know where you want your cylinder psi to be... then I suggest you move the cam fwd or rev to attain your optimal pressures.

On degreeing your cam, you'll know how much you need to advance due to chain slack, distance between cam and crank centerlines, precision of the gear teeth indexing on the cam drive sprockets.

I would say most people suggest adv 4* because they are either too lazy to degree their cam, don't know how, or just guess the amount of mis alignment on the cam events due to the previous mentioned reasons.

It's refreshing to read more people are degreeing their OTS camshafts. In most cases you will pick up performance, and even if you don't... it's the correct way to do the job.
