I had a similar issue that you are having, and I thought it was my computer as well. Question: when you turn the key to the "ON" position does the fuel pump prime?

It ended up being the pick-up coil in the distributor that I just rebuilt (new pick-up coil was cracked) Do you have a spare distributor laying around?

Pull your codes again. You stated that you had an ACT code and ECT code? ECT is probably due to engine being cold but I wonder if the bad act is causing you to be so rich on startup the car won't start.

Have you tried to start it with pedal to the floor?

Have you checked your EFI harness ground? It runs from the drivers side EFI harness, comes out near injector 6/7 and runs to back of driver side head. I was missing this ground and I think it's what caused my weak/no spark on my previous white notchback.

If have a verified good working A9L that came in my 90' LX 5.0 5spd. It was removed to run the PiMP ECU. I don't mind loaning it. Good luck!

I do not have a spare distributor, but did swap out the pick up with a new motorcraft unit, as well as the TFI module.

I actually did try that at first. Thing is, I have no spark coming out of the coil. Zero. New coil netted no change.

I did just buy that new Motorcraft ACT sensor, and will swap it in next. The car ran with the other new replacement sensor I had installed from LMR before though.

Thanks for the suggestion and offer. I did check that ground, as well as the strap from the head to the firewall. Both are secure and in good condition.

So if you remove a plug from cylinder head and lay on manifold..no spark?

Do you have 12v at coil?

Let me refer to my electrical diagrams tonight

So you took apart the distributor and replaced the pick-up coil inside the distributor?

To date I have done the following.

Checked fuses (all are good)

Pulled coil wire, tested for spark (confirmed no spark off coil)

Tested power to the coil with a test light, which lights up with key turn. Need to retest with volt meter.

Pulled codes (got 21 and 24, ACT and ECT out of range) ACT is new but Chinee, have Motorcraft now.

Replaced coil (no change)

Replaced TFI with new Motorcraft (no change)

Replaced PIP with new Motorcraft (no change)

Pulled ECM, checked for burnt paths. All looks good.

Checked power to ECM via connector with test light, has power with key turn to run. Need to retest voltage with volt meter though.

Listened to EEC relay with ECM out of car. Hear click with each key turn, but need to test output with volt meter.

Checked fuel injector harness ground on back of head, and ground strap to firewall. All solid, with metal to bare metal connections.

Fuel pump primes with key turn.

So I need to run back over some things with a volt meter, but using a test light, everything seems to be functioning, but I have no power out of the coil. With the exception of swapping in my Motorcraft ACT, and verifying voltage strength off the EEC relay and at the coil, I have damn near completed the cranks but no start checklist.

Hey man. If that computer doesnt work maybe i could video chat you through it.

It absolutely sucks to work on something and then have something else goes wrong.

Have you checked the computer griund by the battery ?

There has to be a simple answer to your problem.

I agree. When I find it, its probably going to be a slap in my own face moment. I believe I skipped checking the dedicated computer ground off the negative terminal of the battery, and will go back over that. I also did not manually jump the starter solenoid, so I guess it too could be the problem all along. I assumed since the car turns over, the starter solenoid is working. I am however a complete electrical noob.

The car ran when I last parked it. I didnt so much as unhook the battery when I pulled the upper intake (like a dummy) to adjust the rockers. I never sparked anything, so I really dont know how the dedicated ground could have changed. But its worth looking at.

Thanks. I will check these grounds, and the quick disconnect ground for the computer for corrosion. Im still a noob, so testing for voltage drops in the circuit is chinese to me. I'll research how to do it though.

Since I dont really know how to test electrical parts, and the stock part is 29 years old anyway, I ordered a new Motorcraft starter solenoid. It feeds current to the coil during start up, so maybe its having a bad life now. Local Ford dealer had one on the shelf for $53, where as good ol American Muscle has it for $27 shipped. Just waiting on the mail, and will keep you guys updated. Looks like we have a busy night of basketball practice and a meeting for Kindergarten next year for my youngest son, so probably wont get to check the dedicated ground tonight.
