Some might have read about the problems I've been having recently after my turbo install, and well today after playing around with the tune for days and days I finally decided to start taking apart the car. Did a compression check on the two cylinders where the plugs were different, 0psi of compression on both, went further and did a leakdown test, put the tester on #6 and could hear air rushing out form #7... BLOWN HEAD GASKET Looks like the turbo might stay off until summer or until I get another daily driver I might sell the hotside and cold side piping and make a new kit positioning the turbo on the drivers side. I just want to know what caused it... ran fine when it made 10psi, it was running a little rich, but I didnt hear any detonation Looks like the car might be going back NA this weekend.

well shoot, that was short lived.. Didn't even get to hear it run or drive.
I bet you got into a tad bit of detonation, and the gasket just let go. Heads or deck could be warped possibly, causing the heads to never really seal. Just a possibility.

Well, If you decide to sell the turbo, let me know. Don't forget the coil dude.

Don't be too disappointed about all the probs as I think you accomplished a whole lot with your home made turbo kit

Heck you don't have to look too hard to see some who have done nothing more than h/c/i and they have had quite the task to get it all sorted out.

With what you have done with the turbo kit it would not be unreasonable at all to expect many issues to arise and require your efforts in solving each and every one of them. Then there is the task of tuning that beast ...... a thing I would be not too comfortable doing at all without a good bit more forced induction tuning knowledge.

Get you a fresh short block and start the thought process on plan "B"

too bad man... at least you felt the power for one good run

doubt it'd be hard to sell that piping to somebody and make a good amount of coin

Mike, next time you're down this way give me a call and I'll get that coil to you, or I'll bring it up once I change out the HG which should be this weekend.

For right now, it'll be more pratical for me to stay NA, but the dream of forced induction isnt lost. I would like to make a nicer single turbo kit for my car, and I will. I'll probably redesign everything, maybe make the turbo mounted where the smog pump was so its out of the way.

The heads were just recently resurfaced so they were not warped, doubt the block was either but you never know really. I'm defently keeping the turbo, its still pratically brand new, not even 10 miles on it yet, but all the pipes, wastegate, and intercooler will more than likely go to fund for a new engine. Then I'll buy some more parts and make another kit. The power this thing put out was simply amazing for the few miles it ran, and now I dont want anything less.

That really sucks man, I was jealous of your setup. Are you relocating the turbo for a functional reason or do you just want it somewhere else? That really does suck though, looks like you had alot of work in it.

Allan

I was in no way thinking about you or anyone else in particular when I used that stuff to ease Zach's frustration a bit. You can't tell me that you've not seen others on these sites who have suffered a good bit form a h/c/i upgrade.

If I told you some of the stuff that happened to me the first few times I did some major upgrades I would be pretty red faced.

btw Allan ...... isn't it about time for you to move up a bit and become .......

I'd like to relocate the turbo because its a tight fit where it is right now. I orginally didnt want to cut any holes in my fender, but I had no other choice... I'd still like to have smoothed out fenders without any holes in them, so moving the turbo somewhere else would allow me to do that. Also my hood wouldnt shut, so that'd be another reason. Maybe an aftermarket hood would have worked but I'm not sure since I never tried one out. I was just about ready to notch out my stock hood because I didnt have anything else to do the car right now... Good thing I checked everything before I went any further I've learned a lot from doing this, got a lot of welding practice, and fabrication practice. V band clamps instead of 3 bolt flanges, get the pipes coated... It'll all come with time.

get a nice short block and then you can get your turbo set up. sorry to hear about that. I think i would cry if i did all that work just to find out that i have to do it all over again. but with all that you have learned the next turbo setup with a fresh short block should be amazing! Keep up the good work

I give huge props to those of you who take on major projects like this but when it comes right down to it your cars spend more down time then those of us in the north who store them for 5 months

Dont give up yet man.. How do you know it was running rich?? Did you have a REAL air/fuel gauge? (not an autometer one)

You made the mistake i made, and many others make. Beating on the car before its tuned.

Get the HG's changed out, get her on a dyno with someone who knows how to tune boosted cars. Go slow and work from there.

You bought the injectors new right?

Good luck and dont give up yet!! HG's arent that hard to swap out!

The black smoke coming out of my exhaust and 20 miles to a 1/4 tank tells me its running rich. I wouldnt have pushed it hard the first time, but it was really smooth, and I didnt hear anything bad so I kept going. I'll defently take it to the dyno before I go rompin on it again I bought my injectors used with about 3k miles on them. They all looked fine, and all worked fine as far as I could tell.
