CD player!

you have something funny going on and i doubt its the twist and tape of the wires. if you do it right you will have no problems, ive done that on tons of systems and have never had an issue with any of them, flavadave can vouch for it. solder is the way to go though.

if you dont have an amp in there, get a multi meter and check for shorts. the only thing i can think of that would cause a pop, then nothing would be a short/ground issue.


like i said im not going to soder them till i get it working. the connections are fine....this is how i did the radio in my supercoupe...twisted and taped test then soderd...

why would i sorder them if it aint working yet? then i would have to keep cutting and re doing it....
 
Good god man!!!! It has been 5 days!!!!! When you go to Walmart just buy 100ft of speaker wire. Run all new speaker wires. Use the factoy plug for the power and be done with it.

and? i havent touched it in 5 days! got a break in the weather here and put the headers on.

have the cd player isnt a big concern to me....if its not working in a month i dont care....it can sit in the box till i fell like messing with it.
 
Don't worry. I've been without a CD player in my GT since I got it. In fact ... I don't have a radio, at all. Or A/C. Or heat. Or even a vent. That's because the HVAC control spot is now the new home of an aftermarket temp gauge, and the radio slot is ... ummm ... a storage space. :D

If you buy the harness adapter, don't open the package until you find the connector under the dash you need. If you can't manage to find it, then I'd second ttop88's recommendation to just take it back, buy a spool of speaker wire, and just run all new wiring to the speakers (which has been recommended at least twice already).

if you actually took the time to read my advice you would have seen that i said that twist and tape should work fine, but soldering is the best way! its not hard to undo a solder joint though, that and if you have done it before you should be confident enough to solder from the beginning. its pretty hard to **** up the harnesses since everything is color coded.

maybe thats why you cant get it to work, you are only half reading the advice and then blowing up about it!

One of the amp plugs has the following wire combinations:

Dk Green/orange stripe = right front speaker negative
White/lt green dash = right front speaker positive

pink/lt blue stripe = right rear speaker positive
Dk green/orange = right rear speaker negative

Lt blue/white = left front speaker negative
Orange/lt green = left front speaker positive

pink/lt green = left rear speaker positive
pink/light blue ring =left rear speaker negative

Use a flashlight battery and touch it to the pair of wires for each speaker. It should POP if the wires
are correct. If it doesn’t, switch the battery polarity.

last time i checked a speaker is basically just a giant resistor and you can run power through them in either direction. changing the polarity wont make it pop, if it doesnt make a noise you dont have the correct wires.

A speaker is a fixed permanent magnet combined with an electromagnet with a paper or plastic cone attached to the electromagnet. Apply a voltage and the electromagnetic field created by the coil either opposes the magnetic field created by the permanent magnet, or compliments the magnetic field. Opposing the magnetic field pushes the cone outwards (hence the POP). Complimenting the magnetic field, pulls the cone backwards and makes very little sound.

The two years I spent in college learning electronics did mange to teach me how speakers and other electronic devices work.

i guess i was more thinking about the random bit of noise you would get from passing a dc signal through a speaker instead of the pop from the cone.

in my 4 years of college we didnt really get into magnetics and speakers in any of my class. so i never really got an in depth knowledge of them. i knew how they worked but i never though to actually figure what causes the pop, just that it will. we just kind of blew past that to spend time in wireless communications, which was fine by me. cutting edge radar is way more fun than basic speaker design.

i have to say that if thats all you learned in two years you need to ask for your money back. i decided to test this theory just to see, so i hooked up a AA (typical flashlight battery) to a speaker and no matter which way i hooked it up it made a pop. further more, this has no relevance to his problem, all this would tell him if it did work is that his polarity is reversed, and the wires are hooked up to a speaker. since the polarity of the speaker has no effect on the input impedance of the stereo it wouldn't cause the stereo to turn off.



on another note, i talked to a co worker who used to work at a shop that did warranty work for a few of the major car audio companies. his first thought was that your harness is wired wrong, not that it needs a third connector but that a wire or two are swapped. take a look at your yellow, orange, and blue wires. look at the writing on them and make sure they are hooked up correct by what they say, not by just the color.

Jrichker knows his stuff. He's been around here a long, long while and knows the electrical systems on Foxes inside and out like no other. He's saved my butt several times when I was gonig nuts trying to diagnose electrical gremlins in the '89 notch I had (now Frankenstang's).

I'm not saying the man is omnipotent and 100% free of error, but for you to hop on here and drop an insult like that is just disrespectful and unwarranted. :ban:
 
i apologies for the insult, but i took the i went to school for two years as i know more than you because i have a degree. i used to get that all the time when i worked retail even though i have a BS in electrical engineering. im not saying he doesnt know anything about electronics, just that the pop didnt make since to me so i tried it and found that it poped both ways. sorry dude, the noise just didnt make since when i thought about it.

on another note, what does post count matter? is intelligence Dependant on the number of posts on a forum? i lurke for the most part, and post on the talk forum quite a bit, which doesn't count for posts.
 
Post counts matter for the fact that the man has an established reputation as being tech-savvy. Posts in forums like 5.0 Talk and BHR don't add to your post count - only tech forum posts add to your count. Not saying you don't know a thing, yourself, but it just seems kind of inappropriate for a noob to come in and talk smack on a senior member like that.

Sooooo, anyhoo ... Ryan, what's the plan? All-new wiring, or hunting for the stock harness? :shrug:

i dont post a lot, ive been around lurking for quite a while but never signed up. ive been a "member" for coming up on a year now so im not as new as 8 post would suggest. i just dont spend tons of time in the tech forums since i dont currently have a stang.

on the back on topic note, i think that a rewire is over kill since the other deck worked. try putting the f-150 deck back in and see if it works. it it does its your harness or a faulty cd player. ive done a ton of decks, i can pretty much guarantee this.
 
From my own bench test: the stock small dash speakers have a capacitor wired in series with the voice coil,
which means that they will only POP once when you connect a battery across the terminals. To get it to POP again,
you need to reverse the battery connections. The door speakers will POP in when wired in either direction.
So that means I was wrong about the speaker POPing only when wired positive to positive.

BUT: When correctly connected positive speaker input to positive output from the amplifier, the speaker cone moves outward.
If you connect negative speaker input to positive output from the amplifier, the speaker cone moves backward.
Wire two of the same type speakers on the same channel, one correct and the other reversed and you will find
that they are out of phase. That tends to make them cancel each other out, resulting in low volume and poor sound quality.

Having the spaker polarity reversed won't keep the CD player from working, but it will sound lousy.
