What are the specs of these cams? Anything more than a mild aftermarket cam should definately replace the springs. I wouldn't want to experience a valve spring breaking.

I would do it. I don't know if you have ever seen what happens when you have the wrong spring but it is not always nice. I bought a set off trickflow twisted wedge heads for my chevelle. the specs said good to .500 lift. I ran a cam that had .510 lift on the exhaust. started running like crap because a couple pushrods and rocker arms were f'd up. so short story long do what the manufacture recomends they are smarter than you or I.

i would definitly upgrade the springs. i went with comp springs part #26113-16 that is with the xe278ah cam. your cam grind is going to be one step below that its xe270ah and these springs will work with yours also.

I would definetly not do the install without the springs. And $250 is what it's going to cost.

4.6 springs ------> 4.6 heads
5.0 springs ------> 5.0 heads

You'll have to remove the timing cover, the water pump, valve covers and timing chains. The power steering pump and the AC compressor will also have to be pulled out of the way. If you replace the valve springs you will also have to pull the intake manifold and heads. Make sure you position the crank to the safe postition (45 degrees CCW from TDC on #1) before you remove the chains or attempt to rotate the cams or you will bend a valve and possibly damage a piston.

The whole job took me about a day and a half by myself and it was the first time I had replaced cams on a mod motor. I didn't pull the heads so you can add a lot of extra time for that...

I just installed those cams and springs in my car this past weekend. It's a HUGE pain. The install isn't difficult, but it's exhausting and can frustrate you badly. My advise would be to have a shop do it, especially if you don't know your way around OHC engines too well.
In order to do the install you just need basic hand tools, but you will need a spring compressor tool to remove/install the valve springs.

What is the differance between the Comp Cams Springs and the Mod Max springs???

With the Mod Max springs they have a Kit and they have just the springs...Valve Kit 270.00 Just the Springs 80.00
http://www.propowerparts.com/Modular/valvetrain.htm

With the Comp Cams it has also just the Springs... But they are 189.00
http://www.compcams.com/Technical/Catalogs/106-03/HTML/JPG/66.jpg

So can i do just the Mod Max Springs or Do i HAVE to do retainers and etc also???

This is where I got mine. I plan on doing mine with the heads on as many other people have done.
