I'll start off by saying I'm kinda a newb to this in depth work....

so i was going to do a little work tonight but don't have a compression guage. i just removed my timing cover and my haynes manual states I should put the crank TDC on the compression stroke b4 I mark my chains. I don't have a pressure guage to work with tonight. In my head I'm not understanding what difference it would make if it's on combustion or exhuast when I mark my chains and cam wheel.

Soooooo... do i need to do this? Is there any other way to find it?

On the compression stroke ATDC both valves will be closed on the other ATDC the exhaust valve will be closing and the intake valve will be opening, overlap.

+1

Both valves will be closed with the piston at TDC. And yes, it would cause a problem if you did it on say, TDC right after the exhaust stroke. Your cams and rotating assembly would be completely off, and you will have severe engine damge when you try to start it up.
