Cowl hood after lowering?

I was talking to a friend of mine and he asked me if I lowered my Mustang. I told him yeah, and he said I should put a cowl hood because my underhood temps would now be higher. He said because it's at a lower ride height that I don't have as much air circulation under the hood like I used to. He recommended a cowl hood to let the hot air vent. Is there any truth to this?

Neither putting on a cowl hood nor lowering your car will effect the temperature enough to matter in either direction. It is a fact that being closer to the hot assphault will make a difference but it's not enough to have to change anything in your cooling system and certainly a cowl hood isn't gonna make THAT big of a difference. IMO

Wow. That's a new one to me. If anything, a heat extractor hood would be a better choice.

Unless your car somehow starts to over heat now that your lowered, I wouldn't worry about a cowl hood.

my cowl hood did give me an extra 35 rwhp. almost as much as a vtec sticker

lol i dunno about that air circulation thing, but a vented hood or something to let heat circulate out would have to do something.

I would say get one for looks maybe? or better for underhood clearance

Nah, he works for the post office. It just struck me as odd, because he brought this up out of the blue.

You can drive the fastest car in the world and not know jack ***** about it. I've met so many people that drive fast cars and they don't know hardly anything about the car and sure as hell didn't turn a wrench. I may not be the most mechanically inclined but I do what I can and I know every single thing that has been done to the car. On the other hand I’ve talked to some ricer guys that know their ****, one guy made a custom turbo kit and built his block on his own, the car was running 12s last time I talked to him.

A. a 427 is a big block unless its a mega bored/stroked SB
B. His suggestion about needing a cowl hood means he never built that car, he just bought it.
C. Why would you ask the board if you really DO need a cowl hood because you are 1 inch lower to the ground

This ranks right up there with the SRT-4 kid who pulled his oil filter off to drain the oil during his oil change.

Maybe I'm the only one here that might seem to slightly agree, to a point, with the original question proposed. If it's a slight to subtle drop it's not going to make much of a difference there. I do agree if the car is slammed pretty damn low then yes, there isn't as much air passage way(paths) to be able to get fresh air into the engine bay. With the car being lowered closer to the ground you might not be able to get as much fresh cooler air being pulled up by the air dam due to the lack of clearance between the dam and pavement.

As for needing a cowl hood there all's that's going to do is increase the clearance under the hood and might every so slightly help out with getting fresh air in and air out. A heat extractor hood would probably be about the best for reducing air temps under hood.

Again I'd say it'd mainly help out for a car that is slammed pretty dam good compared to a modest/slight drop.

True - a cowl hood FEEDS cool air into the engine, it doesn't really allow much air to escape (at least at speed)
