Craigslist Interaction...am I Right Or Wrong On This?

I've dealt with a few of them. They make it a business reselling parts so they are aggressive in knocking the price down. They make you feel bad and then turn around and jack up the price when they flip it.

Yup, I was just surprised this guy flat out wanted me to take a loss so he could make good money on the parts.

That's when you should have changed your tone and gotten friendly. Then ask how much he would sell the parts for and what his lowest price would be. Then thank him kindly and tell him you would raise the price in your ad.

Me too, more than once, some guy even called me derogatory names when I told him to read the ad.

Been called names many times dealing with craigslist buyers, usually because I didn't respond to their question within 5 seconds of them messaging me. Sorry I actually have a job and might be busy with other things.

I actually took a video of me burning a couch a buyer was interested in, and sent it to him. It was free and he was pissing me off by almost demanding I deliver it. I'd rather burn it or throw it away then deal with those people.

I've also met some really good people on craigslist, mainly mustang guys.

I had about 1 yard of mason sand left over from a walkway project I did.
It was sitting in my driveway so I posted it on CL for free, complete with picture of the sand pile.
I had a woman call and show up the next day in a Chevy Equinox suv, I asked her how she was going
to transport it. She proceeded to open the tailgate, had seats folded down with a tarp that barely covered the back....lol.
That's right her and I shoveled roughly a yard of sand into the back of an suv, It was spilling in every crack and crevice of that poor suv. When she left my driveway just about rubbed the bumper on the apron, poor
Chevy was begging for mercy..lol

I sold a race car toddler bed for $50 on CL. I honestly would have taken $10 just to get rid of it, but like anything, people assume free = junk so I gave it some value.

Lady showed up in a 90's Caddy Deville to buy it. Now, if she had an SUV or truck I would have tossed it in the back and took $10....but she asked me to help disassemble it and stuff it into, and on top of this caddy. Back seat had parts, the trunk had parts and was tied halfway shut, the mattress was strapped to the roof. Front seat had parts....and then she told me she had a 20 mile ride home on the highway. You bet I took that $50

Sold, or attempted to sell a burn barrel for $20. Guy said he wanted it on Tues. I said great, I'm only available on the weekends give me a call Sat AM and we meet up. He didn't know where I lived, but knew the town. Guy also lived about 20 miles away. But we hung up agreeing on Sat AM to meet up.

It's WED AM and I'm at work 30 miles away.... "Hey, I had the day off so I came down to grab that barrel. What's your address i'll be by in 10 mins".

Since I hate CL too, I'll throw in my story.

Listed a brand new Pontiac G8 hood for $300. The guy texts me to offer $200, which won't fly for me. So finally we settle on $250, Friday evening and he'll be over at 10:00 A.M. to meet up with me as he is 1.5 hours away.

10:00 A.M.
Me- Hey man are you close?
Him- Sorry, I got caught up. Just leaving now. Be there at noon.

(I'm pissed at this point.)
12:00 PM
Me- When do you think you'll be there?
Him- Around 2.
Me- You said 12.
Him- Sorry man, I am busy.
Me- Do you still want the hood?
Him - Yeah, I'm really gunna leave now.
Me- Bring the extra $50, you have wasted my whole Saturday.
Him- C'mon man, I really need that hood for $250.
Me- Not for sale anymore.
Him- Okay, I'll do $300. I have to paint the hood tonight for a customer's car.
Me- Cool, see you in two hours.

At this point I figured he would never show up.

Around 4
Him- Be there in 15.
Me- Okay, meet you at Bass Pro Shops.

Get there and the guy tries to hand me $250...
Needless to say, he found the $50 magically.

Gotta love Craigslist.

I do a lot of buying and selling to fund my projects. I’ve learned to never hold anything. 90% of the time if they need till Friday to get the money, they won’t have it.

Lately people just wont give me an offer. They are like "what can you do for xyz" just make a damn offer. The prices are already listed. If you don't want to pay that fine, tell me what you think the parts are worth and we will see if we can make a deal.

Tell ya what, give me $20 bucks now for wasting my time on 2 days and I'll still let you buy it on Friday if no one else does first. lol

Yeah, I think a lot of folks on this thread do put some thought into their asking price. I still find it a little odd that some folks still try to get the seller to issue a lower price than the asking price that had already been established. I am not sure that is really haggling since there isn't a counter offer bid (yet) at that point. It is kind of like buying it and then trying to rob you of the money rather than making a proper offer. Perhaps this is just another way of expressing a lower offer, but the dynamic is different. If someone truly wants to buy something then they should come see it and make an offer then all parties are showing that they are sincere (or, even have enough "skin in the game" to show up).
Without this type of sincerity in approach, I feel "markets" like Craigslist may benefit from having a bidding and/or payment system (as an option). Perhaps, this sounds too much like eBay, but transactions often seem to go through with less hassle on those types of markets (make you bid and win or don't win, not a "special price" because you asked..).
The problem leads to higher starting prices on Craigslist or people listing competitively and loosing even more profit if they give in to "what can you do for xyz" approaches.

Just some thoughts

Why not just list on ebay, then? Craigslist, local bulletins, facebook markets, and even the classifieds on here are for a less structured, non-auction style approach with no additional overhead or expenses/fees/etc...

The problem with ebay-like transactions is that the payment service involves 3rd parties which costs overhead which eats into your sales. I sell on craigslist, because despite the hassle, selling locally makes it easier to show the part in person, agree on terms, shake hands, walk away, and there is no further hassle or commitment aside from what you mutually agree to do. Likewise, buying from CL means I can personally inspect the item and back out of the deal on the spot if it has been misrepresented.

Finally, I respect the approach of not bothering to entertain negotiations until they've come in person. However, I also find myself looking at parts that are some distance away. I get that people would prefer not to negotiate on the chance that you'll flake, but I'm also not going to waste hours on a round-trip unless I know I will get the price I'm after.

Yeah, all of these online markets do have pluses and minuses. the eBay route can certainly add up the fees with listing fees, PayPal, Shipping, etc.. And although it reaches a large audience, there is no guarantee it will sell or that a bid will win. But, it helps filter out a lot of flakiness (not all). I still like Craigslist and fine Mustang classifieds such as Stangnet :). Sometimes it isn't the method of the market, unfortunately it is just the way people can be sometimes. We all want a good deal and we all want items to be represented reasonably well and certainly truthfully. I am willing to accept lower bids than my asking prices, especially if the bidder is buying multiple items (which I am -look around..). But, if one is going to make a lower offer then they should respect that they are getting a price reduction and do what is reasonably possible to make the rest of the deal go quick and easy.

Perhaps, my expectations a bit high, or it is the tone of this thread??

I usually do try to do take some time to do research on each part I sell (market price, vendor info, applications, etc..) and have even looked up information for prospective buyers (I actually helped someone with connector pinouts and pulled up a drawing for them, took extra photos, etc..). So, there is some additional efforts put into some of these listings which adds an element beyond just the cost of parts. (I know there was a thread earlier, were someone mentioned someone wanting them to give more information on what their part's application is..) I like cars and the different projects people are working on and can actually enjoy helping people with their projects (where possible). I believe that is why many of the message boards like Stangnet come together is for this type of sharing of information. The classifieds is probably almost secondary. Any Admins want to chime in on the founding principles, etc.??

Don't get me wrong I have had success on craigslist both buying and selling, and I know I'm mostly bitching. Just like everyone on here, my time is precious and I would rather not spend more of it bsing about the value of parts to our hobby. That's what I come to this site for, haha. I'll gladly pay the fees on ebay to avoid some of the hassle, I'm just having a hard time moving these parts.

Definitely. It's pretty annoying when they want another price or you get the "what's your bottom dollar" comments when there's already a price listed in the ad, like you say.

I sold an explorer intake a couple weekends ago. The guys drove all the way down from San Fransisco and paid my asking price with no hassle. So, we got to talking a bit and they ended up asking a ton of questions about combinations to fitment concerns with headers and specific types of heads. I was happy to help and offered for them to look us up on this site to continue the dialog. But, I think the theme of this thread is about some of the ridiculousness that goes along with dealing with folks trying to hussle, expecting free stuff, or just generally feeling that they're entitled because they acted interested in whatever you listed. This thread to me is a bit of blowing off steam and sharing some comedy :D.

As to Stangnet's founding, I'd say it's mostly about being a place like-minded enthusiasts can get together and chat about the hobby and assist each other.. It makes for a decent business case too, because it offers advertisers their target market. It was even more popular in the fox hey-day. But, I still think the fox forums here are going strong.

"what's your bottom dollar"

I cringe whenever I see this. Makes me want to punch a kitten.

This is a question that should only be asked in private message if at all. The question should really be, "Will you accept $X?" where X is a specific number.

"Your mom is my bottom dollar".

This one is. Other one's I used to be on are pretty much dead. I asked a question a few days ago and it's still in the top 10 posts on the first page on an unnamed site.

Everyone is over on FB, bitching and moaning and insulting each other and asking the same question over and over in a crappy format that makes finding any sort of useful tech nearly impossible.
