I went out to try a 2nd gear burnout...revved to 5K, dumped it, and nothing, i just accelerated slow. Then i smelled a burnt clutch. Then i went to take off again normal this time, and the pedal feels 100x different. Its not as hard, it still works good as far as i can tell, its not as stiff, and seems like it engages farther from the floor now than it did before, and it also feels like its sticking out more, like the actual pedal is. What could I have done?

Geez dude! I always go into 2nd gear burnouts after the tires are already spinning (start in 1st then shift into second). But I've only done those a few times.

FWIW, in my old car, every now and then trying to do a burnout, the clutch would just slip and nothing would happen. This happened several times, with no adverse effects on anything else except the burnout. It drove, engaged/disengaged just fine. Stock clutch right? If you feel it IS messed up, then sounds like time for an upgrade anyway. Shoot, those stock clutches will take a lot of abuse though, I'm still running my stock clutch. :D

well i tried starting off in 2nd, not hitting 2nd after they were spinning. Umm it feels ok, i can still smell it burning with normal use, its not slipping with normal driving, or anything, but i can smell it still, its just the pedal feels different.

Change it.

I just got back from my peformance shop - I was having similar issues. BYE BYE STOCKIE.

Mine was burning when I was running it hard, now I'm treading on hot coals driving it, but it's my DD and I've got to wait til next week until I get the cash together for the job.

The setup I'm going with (possibly might change)
- King Cobra Clutch
- Ford Racing Flywheel
- ADJ Clutch Cable

I talked to him about Spec's but he says they're loud as hell and I'm interested in the KC. Gonna look around for sure before though.

Did the point of engagement change afterwards (like when you start releasing the pedal, does it 'catch' up higher or lower relative to the floor, than it used to)?

WHen you let the clutch out real fast, does it not feel like it is 'releasing' really fast now? That suggests a glazing or that the PP is hurt. If you let the clutch out real fast, it should be VERY abrupt and direct. I bet yours is soft, like you are slipping the clutch.

Good luck Matt.

Matt first of all here come the B$%&*@'n part. Dude you must be crazy dumped it at 5k jesus try more like 2,000-2,500 next you can do it from a standstill and not rolling and it no prob i do it on stockers at the track and drive around the wet box. Its not bad on the clutch if your not hard as hell on it.

Now for the answer IMHO your gonna need a new clutch. I just changed mine for the second time in 4 years. I have a Spec Stage 1 and love it to death. DO NOT GET A KING COBRA! If you are interested in why you can send me and instant message and ill explain. Later man hope everything works out for ya.

Sounds like the clutch is bad for sure.

As for dry second gear burnouts, I do them all the time and my stock clutch is going strong. I do have 4.10's, but also 315 dr's. It has always grabbed and I have never smoked the clutch. My buddy put my dr's on his car and his clutch slipped a few times though. I guess I'm just lucky.

p.s. I always start in second, instead of shifting into it.

less than 15k miles but that isnt the point they arent not put together the same way anymore cause the old parts supplier from ford went out of business. Ive talked to several people about this and the new supplier does not make quality parts.

Who used to made the KC? I thought Valeo did (they are a very reputable company, making clutches for many exotics).

I did the exact same thing last week at Lapeer, but I got on the brakes too hard and it spun the clutch. Now its soft and the engagement point is alot higher than it was when I got there. Now its slipping anything more than 75% throttle in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. I'm not sad tho, just get another McLeod DF, this ones been great, probably has 150+ 1/4 passes, tons of 5k dumps, and lots of hard street miles in its 3 years in my car.
