Disappointing race results

Okay guys, I am looking for some advice.Went to the 1/4 mile track Wed. and ran the following,

0-60 ft 2.3509
330-6.5466
1/[email protected]
1/[email protected].

I have a 95 GT Conv., Automatic, 355 Gears, 275/40/18 on rear, GT40P heads, Explorer Intake, PP 70MM TB, E303 Cam, GT40P headers, Flowmaster 40's-No CATS.

I feel the car should had gone faster. I am thinking of removing the E303, install stock cam and juice it with nitrous.

What do ya'll think? Thanks

Dallas

Well if you could get your 60' down a little, that will help right there. A 2.0 should put you around a 14.4, which is still slow considering what you have done, but still. What was the temperature and humidity when you were running? While weather can have a negative effect on performance, I wouldn't think it would make a H/C/I 5.0 run 15's. You might wanna pull the codes and see if there's anything wrong with the motor (sensors going out are a real common problem, and a real easy fix). Good luck!

The humity was about 80%, On the Coast of Mississippi after rain all morning, temp was around 80 or 85.

I have new o2 sensors, the only codes I have are on the EGR,,because I disconnected it and installed a block plate in place of it.

I have a new Air Temp sensor,, because I broke the old one installing the CAI. I have cleaned the MASS Air sensor, MY TPS is set to .95 VDC at idle.

I swear it seems slower since I went from a 95 Cobra cam to the E303.

I'm thinking its a combination of tune, weight of conv, and that its an auto.(whats your timing, f/p, at?) I would take it to a dyno to see what the air/fuel is at. Also, didn't see any mods for your auto, would get a stall and shift kit, chk for vacuum leaks, header leaks, ect.. ,

I don't think I understand autos very well, but I was expecting at least 98 - 99 mph outa that car... thats how I'm basing my assumption on a bad tune... crappy driving can account for mid high 14's and 15's... but his mph should tell the story of what the car is capable of... and 94 mph is awful low for a h/c/i car...

The cam can most certainly make it feel and run slower if you are not able to take advantage of the rpm range of it. What is your car shifting at? Is it around 5000-5200? If so you need to raise that to around 5600-5800 with that combo at least, in doing so I'd expect an easy gain in trap speed with those parts to the tune of 3+mph. Is the tranny completely stock? If so you need at a minimum a new torque converter, a shift kit of some way to make the shifts faster and harder, and a way to increase the shift point of it. The 3.55 gears are not well suited for your combo and drag racing since I know the stock AODE can run to around 90mph in a stock car before shifting into 3rd, so with the 3.55's I bet you just barely into 3rd when you cross the finish line, idealy you want to cross just slightly above your peak power RPM. There is a lot of room for improvement though which is a GOOD thing since you do a lot to maximize the combo you already have and get some decent results out of it.

I just went outside and ran the code reader.

Key on Engine Off- I get EGR colsed value high- I figured I would get that one

Key on engine on - I get Thermactor air system fault,, yep- aint got it
And EGR error again

On the cylinder balance test - every thing is good- passed.

On the E303 - I installed it straight up, no advance - no retard- O

Ignition Timing is set to 10

The Trans was rebuilt in Jan., stock converter.. They said they put a Superior Shift Kit in it. It does not feel like it. It shifts at a little over 5000 at WOT. I have a Transgo kit on hand that I may install in it.

I rebuilt the motor in Jan. bored .30 over, new pistons, .10 and .10 on the crank, had the heads checked, installed new valve seats, no porting or anything special.

I have checked for vaccum leaks and can't find any. I am pulling around 16 to 17 steady on vaccum at idle at around 900 rpm (E303 Cam does not like low idle once in gear)

Like killer said you need a converter and a strong shift kit along with a computer tune to raise the shift points.

Also try advancing your timing to 14 or so degrees because 10 is not what you want at all.

Also the 95 cobra cam is even less agressive than the stock GT cam but not by much, so you kinda wasted some time putting that in the car. You just need to take advantage of a changed power band.

Killer,
What gears do you suggest? 3.73 or 4.10? How will that affect the trans? I thought I read somewhere that the trans does not want to shift out of 1st unless you burp the throttle when running 4.10's.
Yeah it can have trouble but that would be fixed with the chip that it seems you really need to get to up your shift points.

I have an idea.....

Trash the AODE and replace with Manual :)

Now you're thinking!

But I'd check into everything first and MAKE SURE the tranny is what is hurting you so bad. That would be alot of trouble (doing manual swap) just to find out that something else was your problem...

You really need a 3500+ converter with that E cam and it needs to be rev'ed to around 5800 rpm. You'll also need more gear to get the best times from your car...like a 4.10-4.30. With a good converter, gears and spinning the motor higher you could easily drop a large amount of ET assuming that you have the traction to go along with that stuff.

The E cam and stock converter ARE DEFINATELY slowing your car down compared to the stock cam.

Why is everybody saying "heavy vert?" They are only about 150 pounds heavier at most and that is approx 1.5 tenths. The auto is the killer unless you go with 4.10's and converter. That may take off a full second!

 Yea if anybody thinks verts are slow, should just talk to Paul.

Umm... they are more than that. Stock for stock my car weighed OVER 3560 versus my cousin's 94 GT leather/full power equipped 5 speed coupe which tipped the scales at 3350lbs. Also, I ran a 15.2 at 90mph stock and he ran a 14.8 at 93mph stock at the same track under like circumstances. There is a bigger difference there than most people think.
