Does your 5.0 overheat run hotter with underdrive pulleys??

I had no heating problems from the underdrives, my problem was from not having the air diverter in place, after i put that in there she ran at temp with a stock radiator in place.

If you are planning any sort of mods down the road, I suggest a 3.27 or 3.55.

I hate my 3.73s and 5-spd.

I disagree. AOD's need a lower gear. 3.73's are perfect if you do a lot of highway driving. Off the top of my head the final drive is like .67 on the AOD? Here is a good gear/ rpm speed calculator. I think the difference in 3.73 to 4.10 at 70 mph is like 200 rpm. 2400-2600. Just know you will use the same speedo gear for anything 3.55 and numerically higher, so it will not be 100% accurate. I used to drive mine on the highway with 4:30s makes me laugh to hear you guys hating on 3:73s and 4:10s haha

I just don't like buzzing the tach on the interstate. Feels like I've got an engine brake when I let out of the throttle....like you're always searching for another gear. Not my cup of tea.

stupid question but I just got my used U/D pulley set and the guy didn't include the 4 allen head bolts for the crank. I'll just get them at Tru Value down the street. If I remember, they are 3/8" 1 inch long? No washers . No loctite and 20 ft. lbs. on all the bolts? Went to the March site and their instructions suck, they don't list the size bolts or amount to torque them.

They'll go on the same as your stockers. Same length too. Use a little blue Loctite and you're good to go. The reason for the Allen head bolts is because the inner diameter of the crank pulley is small enough that it would make contact with the standard hex head bolts they're replacing.

No doubt the best bang for the buck is probably swapping out to a lower gear set, especially in an AOD.Couple of suggestions. Go with at least a 3 .73 or 4.10's with the AOD. For gears, I would get the FMS set with the deluxe install kit. I think LMRS sells the entire kit- gears, install kit, oil and friction modifier for a decent price. Unless you are very confident in your mechanical ability let someone who is reputable and has experience do the install as it takes specialized tools for a proper install. While the axles are out might as well inspect the seals and bearings. The other alternative is looking on the classifieds or CL for an entire rear end with the gears already installed.

Mike, you're in S.Fla, I'm in Pembroke Pines: who would you recommend for the gear install?
Maybe I would use the same person/shop dor installing my Auburn Posi Unit.

Thanks guys for the responses, the new alternator is in. I think I'm going to save up for gears instead, I've got an auto trans with 2.73's so those $60 for the pulleys will be better spent toward some nice gears.

Hey friend, good luck on the gears. I agree, I think you'll like the gear swap right away....

Screw the pullys! If you aint got gears yet, DO IT. That is THE best SOTP mod you can do. ( other than a power adder of course) And yes if you have to go any long distances, do the .373's. But from personal experience, the .410's are a ton of fun in the AOD. And it sucks your not local. Guy here buys the gear set from FRPP and installs them for 300.

I need a deal like that here in SoFla!

What do you HATE about your 3:73's and the T-5, please elaborated...

EDIT: OK, I read up the thread abit. I see where you mentined some points about your other car. i assume it had T-5 and 3:73's.

1200gt, I'll PM you with a few local shops. I'm going to be swapping in 3.73's into my stang soon, as well as one of Dan's valve body ( silverfox with stage 2 shifts and get rid of that stupid TV cable). The valve body install although messy is easy but I'll have a shop do the gears. Haven't done a set of gears in over 10 years and don't have the dial indicators, etc. anymore.

Brian, thanks. I know they need allen heads to clear the inside of the pulley. I'll take a bolt to True Value but if I remember from when I did the last set (in 2000 lol ) they are 3/8" 1 inch long. I found a Taurus fan at the jy and a FAL 33054 VSC off Ebay which I'll swap out the stock mechanical fan for at the same time. Already have the 130 amp 3g installed. On the last few cars I did this on it was a nice little pickup in hp for not much cash.

Damnit, I can tell it already that it won't be long before I'm looking for V2's again. And I promised myself when I bought this one August 2012 I was keeping THIS one stock.

I had a problem when I upgraded my alternator to the 130 amp and left the ud pullys on without the ud alt pully. It overheated within 10 mins of idle. I took them off and put the stock ones on without any more problems.

I can elaborate further...

My '88 originally came with a AOD, so naturally i put in 3.73's. For the AOD car, this was perfectly fine. However, i converted the car to a T-5 with the common 3.35 1st gear. So I was stuck with the 3.73's from the AOD days.

Now, before I did this, i bought a 2003 GT with a 5-spd. It had 3.27's factory. I know the RPM range and powerband was different, but i had absolutely no desire to change the gearing on that car. It was perfect. Car pulled hard on the highway. I could downshift to 3rd and shift into 4th around 100MPH and it would keep pulling strong. I used to LOVE driving on the highway with this car because it felt quick and algile from 60-90MPH. Having driven friends cars with 4.30's and 4.56's, it didn't have the same feel as with my stock gears.

I sold the GT and got to work swapping my 5.0 to a 5-spd. Took it for the first drive. My car has decent power. Best time i ever ran with the AOD was a 14.0 but i've never run it with the 5-spd, so it's probably comprable to a healthy stocker 5.0. 1st gear is pretty much a burnout gear. DR's would probably help, but the car is primarily a weekend cruiser that might see rain, so i wanted a normal street tire.

The real reason i disliked the 3.73's was because I felt it geared the car more for low-end driving. From 0-50MPH it was fast because i had 4 gears to wind through, but get up on the highway and i pretty much had two. 4th gear would high, and i couldn't really use it past 55-60MPH unless i was really flooring it. ANd 5th gear just didn't really feel all that powerful. So the 5.0 just didn't have that same 60-90 nimbleness like my '03GT where i could roll on the gas at 60, and be up to 90MPH in a few seconds without having to downshift.

Granted, a 2.73 geared 5.0 is just waaaaay too tall of a gear, that's why i think a 3.27, or a 3.55 is a perfect gear for a cruiser 5.0...especially one you like to get up on the highway and take a long ride with. If you are building a dragster, then 3.73's or shorter might be fine.

Is that even possible????

Hey Mike, I am a little ways off from the gear install. I am in the project planning stage now. I am still trying to work thru a nose swap BACK to 86 from the Areo. Still researching the possibilites of keeping the 93 fenders and wells for a custom mating to the foureyed GT nose. Found a few options on other forum though they are short on detailed specs to accomplish. It's the fender extensions that I understand need to be cut and fiberglassed back to specs-out. Honestly, this is driving me nuts, because I'm ready to go to paint as soon as the front is complete.

I'm leaning towards 3:55's with hope for a comprimise in both senarios. I won'y hit the track, and will see a bit of highway cruising. I have a vert and drop the top often.

I have a set of both 3:27's and the 3:55's in my storage. Not sure what's in my 86 stock???? have to Let's be in touch, check. prob. 3:27's now.

Thanks sincerely for the shop referals. I will look into them - I head a lot about M Specialties...

Let's be in touch,

Dwayne

No problem Dwayne. Tell Tim that I said hi,. He will take care of you and is a great guy. Also. let me know if you dont want the 3.73's. If they are FMS and don't whine I may take them off your hands.

Also, I saw a nice four eye up at the U Pull in WB with good fenders, extensions, and a decent nose. I think it was am 83? white.. On Southern Blvd by the turnpike.
