Double clutching

What exactly is it and how do you do it? I have been getting different answers. Thanks and sorry for this probably dumb question.

Way back, before all trannys had synchros, you would clutch it, put it in neutral, let the clutch out, then repeat and put into gear. That's the way I understand it anyway.

Most modern cars are equipped with devices called synchronizers that help to synchronize the speed of the gearbox with that of the engine. This effectively eliminates the need for double clutching.

Some large trucks on the other hand have so many gears that synchronizers are inefficient, while race cars can squeeze out more power without them, making double clutching a fact of life.

It is when you throw it in neutral, rev match for the next gear or let the rpms fall for an upshift, then press the clutch in and put it in gear. Hence the term, double clutching. It's a rather slow process not to mention useless with modern technology.

Thanks I understand now. I ask this because I heard you have to do it when shifting to third in a tko 500/600. My doesn't like to shift into 3rd at high rpms. Waiting for pro 5.0 shifter to see if that solves it, but I heard shifters don't fix it either. I guess I'll give double clutching a shot. Thanks guys.

Slow process? I dont know dude, Vin Diesel is making fun of Paul Walker for not doing it and thats why he lost the race in the fast and furious. I get all my racing knowledge from that movie and if wins Vin Diesel drag races, i'm doing it too. In fact last week i was spraying too much Nawwwz and my intake manifold was overheating and then my floor boards blew out.

EDIT: Dammit crazyhrs, you beat me to the fast and furious punch.

my tko-600 shifts smooth as butter. although 3rd and 5th gear is a little loud

Shifts fine as long as I don't go over 4500 rpm into 3rd.

Just a joke the old old cars had to be double clutched...and were very slow my stepdad has a model A thing tops out at 50mph......he tried to do a burnout once in it and blew up the whole rearend........

Not only is double-clutching not needed on modern hardware but some car companies like VW are selling cars with clutchpedal-less manuals like the DSG in the new GTi's....

I double clutch a 10sp tri axle dump....not a mustang. As soon as i read this thread i thought of Vin Diesel...lol...damn ricer movie.

I have heard that double clutching is useful in road racing now-a-days..but now with the clutch-less shifting, I'm sure that's going to go away too!!

I find double clutching fun...one of my favorite shifts is a double clutch at about 75 or 80 from 5th to 3rd, (stock 3.27 gears). That one will really put you in your seat. Also, it makes downshifting a lot smoother. When you are proficient in double clutching you can take it a step further with heel-toeing too. Where you hit the gas pedal (in neutral) while you are on the brake headed into a turn. It takes a lot of practice, but when you get good at it, it's a lot of fun. Give it a try, but not in traffic...

Have any of you evern tried double clutching while racing? It's impossible to do fast.

Me and my buddy were in my car one day making fun of that famous Vin diesel quote when I decided to try to double clutch the 1-2 and 2-3 shift. Oh man what an overcomplicated and useless technique.
