I hate ethanol. :notnice: Ever since they started using larger amounts of it in gas, my
10:1 DD has been knocking under part throttle acceleration. And yes I use 93 octane. I was beginning to think there was something mechanically wrong even though it's not throwing any codes until I tried the acetone trick to bump my fuel mileage. Not only am I getting better mileage, but the knocking has completly gone.

About the mileage, I haven't been recording miles or anything, but my driving habits in any given week are pretty standard. I always fill up at 1/4 tank since it makes me cringe less at the pump than filling up a bone dry tank. So on 3/4 of a tank I can make it to work and back, few miscellaneous trips here and there after work and the occasional high speed burst to get around morons that should not have a license for 4 days before I hit a 1/4 and have to fill up again. On Sunday morning I put 4 ounces of acetone in a full tank and it is now Friday. I'm 1/8 away from a quarter of a tank and by the time I drive home from work tonight it will be right at 1/4. So, I've made it 6 days on the same amount of gas that is usually gone in 4. I'm going to do some mileage comparisons, but for now 2 extra days without having to fill up is proof enough for me.

me too i say that everytime i read one of these posts... avent ran into anything bad yet!! but im not gonna try it on the stang im gonna try it on my sable...stang isnt a daily driver so i dont care and wont risk it if it only gets me 30 miles more per tank..but my sable already gives me 350 -360 to a tank which is 16 gallons so if i can get it to 40 then ill be happy!!

I've read some of the scientific reports in the link posted above which all seem to conclude that it's pretty much impossible for acetone to improve mileage form a chemistry standpoint, and that the improvements people see are from it's cleaning effect on the engine. I don't know, but if that's the case, maybe it only needs to be used in a few successive tanks every once in a while in order to maintain efficiencey Who knows?????

how could that be though...i have read threads on here of guys with mods and 3.55 gears getting 25 mpg...you could barely get that from a stock 5 liter with stock 3.08s....brand new!!

I had used it for about 8 months on my DD and concluded there really wasnt a noticable increase. Btw I went to the same gas station and normally the same pump and did not top off just let the pump cut it off when I was recording the fuel mileage. But try it for yourself, I just got tired of the hassle.

Here's un update on my original post above. I just drove home from work on this the 6th day of my experiment, and it's Friday so I figured I'm allowed a little fun, so on the way home I screwed around for a few lights with this turbo GTI that was acting like "Teh Win", and after that I was in the mood so I basically rallied the car on the way home and I'm still 1 tick above 1/4 which is where I figured I'd be by the time I got home. So, something is working apparently whether it be cleaning effect or something else. I'd say it's at least worth a shot for anyone interested just to see since acetone is so cheap anyway.

i just told my dad that he and i should try the acetone thing and he almost s#!t his pants over it. he thinks it might eat away at parts in your fuel system like injectors and lines. anyone had any experience with this?

I've read a lot of reports where people have soaked plastic fuel system parts in pure acetone for months and the only thing that happen was a little swelling on rubber seals and stuff, but it's so diluted in your gas tank It shouldn't affect anything. A lot of people have been running it for years with absolutely not trouble. Check out the link near the top from NCSU Thuglife and you can read a lot of good stuff about it.
