With all the guys that knock down 30 MPG in their 20 year old V8 Mustangs, it has to make you wonder why Ford ever built an econobox?
Take the numbers listed here and knock 10 mpg off of them, and it will be about right.
I got / can get 30 mpg in my 5.0 fox, in the right conditions, because I know how to drive it. When I installed my vacuum gauge, I started doing consistently better on fuel because I started driving it differently.
Your average idiot will get 15 mpg in a 5.0 and 30 in an econobox because they dont know / care how to drive for economy. I'm sure I could do much better than EPA ratings in an econobox too, but, I dont know, because I dont own one.
I doubt you are getting a legit 30 MPG, I would love to see your methodology for measuring this. Furthermore, while I agree that you could do better than average for a certain period of time, in GENERAL the EPA estimates are fairly accurate snapshots of what you can expect to achieve over the life of the car.
When someone asks what kind of mileage I get out of my car, I tell them what I average, not what I once got while going downhill with a tailwind while drafting a semi.
