Well i got my 65 coupe back on the road yesterday.Went out to drive it last night and it was a quart and a half low on tranny fluid(ATF).theres no leaks anywhere on the outside of it so I guess its the tranny cooler.BUt not quite sure because soon as I put the fluid in it started smoking out the pipes like a freight train.Oh and the tmimng chain cover is leaking again.I just finished putting the new gaskets on it Friday.Does anyone have any idea why this stuff has happened. The only conclusion I can come up with is that the tranny fluid might be coming from the vacum tube from the tranny to the carb port. Why I have no clue. The fluid leak is a mystery also.Im gonna get a new radiator cap for it to make sure thats not the problem.Someone told me that the timing chaion cover leaks are very common on the stangs and there almost impossible to fix because something wrong with the cover. Its not running right at all.It doesnt sound like its missing at speed but at idle it mises on cyl 4&7.Its got a mallory ignition/dist on it.well thanks for any help.

Well i just bought the car from a friend of a friend and he said that he had just got the motor rebuilt. When i got the car the motor was already out of it and i had to install it.I replaced the gaskets because there was a leak between the timing chain cover and the block.Yeah everytime I refill the tranny it smokes really bad. I pulled the vacum hose from the back of the carb and theres a little tranny fluid in it.

That sucks. Sorry to hear that, it sounds like there is a serious problem with the tranny or at least the vacum modulator. Luckly the modulator is actually not that hard to change out and you can pick one up for like 20 something bucks from autozone. As far as the timing chain cover I assume that you are loosing water from the cooling system. I would think that a new gasket would solve that one. On my stang I had a leak at the water pump. It was a bolt hole that was leaking. I solved it with good old RTV. Is there any posibility of there being a crack in the timing chain cover? Can you actually see where the water is coming out?

no its just seeping out from the mating surfaces I think.I think Im just gonna run it up to my in laws shop and take it all back off and check it out.Its about the only thing i think of. And for the tranny .I just took off the vacum modulator.Im thinking thats all it.It not suppost to have tranny fluid coming out of it.Butt ill try it and hopefully thats all it is.

Sounds to me like you've maybe got too much oil in the transmission. Where is your timing cover leaking? Is it from the front seal? If it is, then you may need to get the tool to center the timing cover before bolting it down. Ford fixed the centering problem on the later covers by installing dowels in a couple of the timing cover bolt bosses in the block. Or your balancer may be worn to where the seal doesn't contact it. Felpro makes a kit with a sleeve to fix this.
