Ok, here's the deal i have a work buddy w/ a 98 BMW M3, i told him a few weeks ago about going to the local track for friday night racing, so today i ran into him and he just says straight up "ok when you going back to track so we can line up beside each other". He insisted several times we need to race..anyone know what one of these runs 1/4 in, i think he may have some different pulleys and air intake, fairly stock..I got my 3.80 posi installed since last time out..

I think they run about a 14 second 1/4 mile. Probably will come down to driver.

You are being set up .....

He knows what he has.... compared to your classic. Swap out engines- then tell him you are ready to race !!!!

Take off your front sway bar and install full-on drag slicks--then give him a run. . . .

one of two things will happen... either you'll win and he'll have some type of excuse (these cars do run 14.0 stock) or you'll lose and be pissed off cause some guy you work with who probably never turned a wrench beat you and now he thinks his car's the sh't; but since he's in an M3 he probably already does.

The M3/M5's are no joke when it comes to performance (compared to newer cars anyway). The 5.0 liter M5's weigh close to 4k and run low 13's but keep in mind these cars aren't cheap. The water pump alone for an M5 2002-2003 is close to $500 and pistons are about $300 A PIECE....I know this cause a guy I work with is thinking of buying one.

You already have a time slip, show him what you run and tell him to see if he can do any better. I wouldn't give him the joy of beating you at the track and if he can't come up with a faster time slip he'll just keep his mouth shut.

I used to be good friends with a guy who had a chevelle that was always faster than me, back then he was runnin 14.4's, he thought he was the fastest thing around. I'm quite a bit faster than him now and coincidently he never comes around anymore. Let your slip do the talking!!

Well, the front sway bar has been off for a while and i just have the little
215/60/14 DR's for now, but at least it won't be a wonder wheel anymore...

I say go race for the fun of it! Who cares if he's a bit faster? BMW M3s are superb machines, and he should beat you...a E36 M3, even stock, with a competent driver and fair track conditions should be able to break 14s. If you beat him, on the other hand...you will certainly have some bragging rights, my friend.

mikemustang289...by all means, encourage your friend to pick up one of those M5s. Those things are torque monsters (unlike the new ones)...a completely different animal than most other BMWs.

Tell him he needs to beat you by one second per $10,000 more that he spent than you.

I'm a member on an M3 board. I'm going to see what some of the E36 1320ft times are. I'll post up when I hear from them.
