Hesitating about installing the gears

I went shopping around today at some local shops for installing my 4.10 gears. This guy at this one shop i went to actually owns a stang and has been building them all his life. He told me that putting in gears with such high mileage on my car and tranny wasnt such a good idea. Right now on the clock i have 185.5 k on it. Yeah i know its a lot. I got the tranny re built last year. Its a 96 GT Auto. Now since talking to this guy he kind of has me hesitating, and im sure he wouldnt have told me this if he didnt know better because every other shop just gives me a price, this guy actually sat down and had a conversation with me for about a half hour. What do you guys think, should i hold off on the gears or just say the heck with it and throw them in there?

Do the gears. If your trans fails it fails, the car has alot of miles on it anyway like you said! Only way it will is if you're hooking with DR's and causing it to slip alot and over heat.

If its in mechanically good shape put them in.

If you think the engine/tranny is going to take a crap from revving a few hundred RPM higher on the highway then you have other problems to address aside from installing gears, lol.

Itd also be a prime time to replace those high mile bearings in the rear end since its gonna be cracked open.

Are you referring to the bearing kit for the gears? I got these with the gears that I bought. I think im just going to go ahead and do it. If the motor goes or the tranny goes, just another reason for me 2 buy another one

the motor will be fine.

however due to the increased rpm's the transmission will take the brunt, heat is the killer of all transmissions. you might want to look into a tranny cooler as your next modification in the short term, and perhaps a shift kit/jmod while youre at it.

What kind of quotes were you receiving for the install?

I know how you feel about being hesitant about installing some things. I've had my PI cams here for a while though haven't got them installed yet. I have 150k or so on the car and haven't had any engine problems as of yet. I'm afraid the cams will result in that

yeah, tranny cooler regardless or gears being put in, our tranny is a damn oven. I have my tranny out right now, and damn **** looks worn - glad im doing an overhaul before i move - jesus.

I hope you have the master kit, which includes both pinion bearings, both carrier bearings, and both axle bearings. Tell your installer up front that you want him to replace all of the bearings.

+1 Your differential probably could use a rebuild.

With all of this, your install cost will probably be a little higher than average, but because of your high mileage, it would probably be worth it to do it now. Enjoy the gears!

I would not worry about it, if something breaks then fix it. Also be sure and install a tranny cooler as was said.
