back after the manifold when i reset my timing, i was just going to set it at 10*...well i was sitting in the driver's seat and my buddy was on the gun looking at the marker...well when the timing mark was pointed at the 10* mark the timing was "bouncing" a little he said....and then when he advanced to like 12* it was rock solid....what would cause this???

...idk what made me just rememeber this(it was MONTHS ago) but i figured id ask

I had a little bouncing issue, the first time I set my timing when I got my car. It was bouncing and would stay still for a little while and then bounce after I would reset it. I thought my dist. might be loose but it wasnt. I replaced my cap and rotor and it was fine. I also had a ball. go south and it could be that too, so keep an eye on it to see if it looks spun or wobbels(sp?).

Mine isn't rock solid when I set it. I have a brand new MSD distro. I wonder if it isn't just my crappy timing light.

The electronics and circuitry in the light must also be considered. If it doesn't take EXACTLY the same amount of time between getting the spark signal and flashing the light, it would 'appear' that the timing is bouncing.

960rpm = 16 rev/sec
16 rps = .0625 sec/rev
.0625sec/rev / 360° = .00017 sec per degree of crank rotation

So.. if the light varys by .000085 sec in it's time from trigger-to-flash it could appear that the timing is bouncing a 1/2° (about what mine seems to bounce). That's the first time I calculated that. It may be my crappy light...

Is my math right? Opinions?
