Hi everyone. Been outta commission for a while. I am due a tune up on the old horse soon and I want to go ahead and rebuild my injectors while I am at it. i'm comfortable with all the basic tune up stuff, i've done tune ups on the car since I bought it, but I've never messed around with injectors. So...

#1 how difficult is it to separate the fuel lines using the special plastic wrench things, and are there any precautions i need to take other than properly relieving the fuel pressure first?

#2 how cautious do you need to be when removing the injectors themselves? are they especially brittle anywhere?

#3 i have heard that you need to treat the o-rings before you install them. what is the best way?

#4 why is it when you take an average looking girl and surround her by a bunch of fat chicks, she suddenly becomes the hot chick?

thanks

1: easiest way to do it without taking the fuel lines apart is to take the 2 bolts out that hold the fuel rail to the intake.

2: injector casings are pretty thick so just use caution and you'll be ok.

3: yes treat them with engine oil. popular use is 10/30 but any will do.

4: depends on how much beer you drink

The disconnect tool is very easy to use. I would personally spend the extra $10 and get the metal ones. Sometimes there are stubborn connections though. There are 2 bolts on each side that hold the fuel rail on. Just rock the injectors as you pull. They will come out pretty easily. Be sure to get a new o-ring set for like $5 if you are using used injectors or re-using yours. Most people use motor oil on the o-rings.

Along with an oring set for the injectors I would get a pintle cap set. There is a guy on ebay that sells the pintle caps, orings, spacers and injector filters for around $15. Well worth it. The pintle caps are usually what break. They get brittle over time and when you wiggle the injector to get it out sometimes they break.

Some people use motor oil others use petroleum jelly to lubricate the injector o rings when installing them back into the intake and fuel rails. I have used both. Either is acceptable just do not use any silicone lubricant on the oring since there is the possiblity of clogging an injector. Not likely to happen but it would suck to have to rip it back apart only to find that is the problem.

Good luck. Its not a hard job. Getting to the fuel rail is where most of the labor is. The rest is easy.

And like bubba-dough said get the metal fuel line tools if you are going to get a set. Much better than the plastic ones.

Fuel injector seal kits with 2 O rings and a pintle cap (Borg-Warner P/N 274081) are available at Pep Boys auto parts. Cost is about $2.74 per kit.. The following are listed at the Borg-Warner site ( http://www.borg-warner.com ) as being resellers of Borg-Warner parts:

http://www.partsplus.com/ or http://www.autovalue.com/ or http://www.pepboys.com/ or http://www.federatedautoparts.com/

Most of the links above have store locators for find a store in your area.

Use motor oil on the O rings when you re-assemble them & everything will slide into place. The gasoline will wash away any excess oil that gets in the wrong places and it will burn up in the combustion chamber.

The pintle caps fit either injectors with a pin sticking out the injector end or 4 with more tiny holes in the injector end

thanks for all the info guys. i bought a rebuild kit off ebay that comes complete with everything needed to rebuild the injectors. i would just buy new ones but my budget for mustang parts is at an all time low after my most recent kidney surgery.

and i noticed most of you guys cleverly avoided the fat chick question. i guess i'm on my own on that one!
