How hard is too hard on the engine?

There is no way any one can really make serious cross country progress without engine breaking. And the brakes will won't like stopping the heavy Stang so after a mile or two I should think they're spent.

For this reason an automatic car will always have a MASSIVE disadvantage point to point.

I don't mean letting the car normaly slow down while in gear is bad, taching it up to 5000 rpm to help slow down altough is going to cause more wear over time.
