Well, I've got 2 weeks left before heading to Quanitico for training so I thought I'd better take my new car down to the track before I go. It's a 91 LX hatch, 306 and a T-5 Z. I've had it about 4 weeks, and that's about how long I've been driving stick
So we get down to the track and the first run was crap.... 18.48 mostly cause I launched at around 2500 with tires the consitancy of butter. And no, I didn't go through the waterbox. That plus I missed 3rd.

Second run was my best, eased into it from about 1500 and again missed 3rd, just not by so much. Cut 2 seconds to a 16.65

Third one sucked the worst, for the love of christ I could not get it into 3rd... again. Me and third gear don't get along very well under strain apparently. Anyways... 19.38

Overall I'm, well, satisfied, not very happy cause I thought I'd do better and I broke my new sunglasses on the way up there, but for driving a stick for only a little over a month and not roasting the clutch in that time.... I give it about a 'meh'

Run 1:
1.1689 - Reaction
3.1897 - 60'
12.49 - 1/8
15.79 1000'
18.483 - 1/4
84.97 - 1/4 mph

Run 2:
.7499 - Reaction
2.563 - 60'
10.91 - 1/8
14.06 - 1000'
16.65 - 1/4
88.17 - 1/4 mph

Run 3::notnice:
1.037 - Reaction
2.47 - 60'
12.48 - 1/8
16.388 - 1000'
19.38 - 1/4
77.77 - 1/4 mph

I think the spring is either busted or not there.... it has like no return to center. When I'm running it I have to basically jam it into the side of the gate in second and push up for it not to hit the gate between 1 and 3, which it what it did every time. I need a lot of practice cause yeah, I do admit that I suck :(

Sounds just like you need practice, or third is going. I had that issue one day at the track, and found out second gear was on it way out. But it could also be driver error, which is easy enough to fix. Just takes practice, and maybe a better shifter!

wow, makes my old 16.8s look good.
take some stickies next time. get the 60' way day, practice shifting and get it good. and i bet the times will improve. THe 3 times u posted were very inconsistant, missing gears is horrid, hurts the times bad. I think its mostly just your driving that needs to be improved. It will come in time.

also, how many miles on the engine?
also does it have stock gears??
list all the mods of the car

the stock shifter doesnt have a centering mechanism, if it does, then it sucks.
with a better shifter, you wont have a problem finding 3rd at all.

you need to get a shifter, its almost required if your going to race. It makes more than a difference, than you would think. I havent missed a gear yet. Only time i mess up is when i let out on the clutch to fast.
