I took my ride out for a couple of hours today and I cant hear and have a major headache from breathing in exhaust fumes on account I was too lazy to put the tail pipes on(which well be put on tomorrow!) anyhow, I had the famous surging idle and I fixed it! all I did was unplug the iac..the idle dropped way down where it should be and when you are sitting at a light, the idle doesnt shoot up like it did..it didnt even throw a trouble light..I dont know if its recommended unplugging it but it works

You shouldn't have to unplug it. If it runs better when you do, soomething is wrong with it. It may be better now, in this exact situation, but it's there for a reason unlike the vestigial organs like the smog pump... actually has a job to do when it's working right. I have heard of people cleaning it, but I couldn't say myself. Oh, and I love dumps. I've been running with my tails sawzalled off at the muffs for well over a year now, no cats, and the fumes are barely noticable. I can sit at a stoplight with the windows down and be fine, and my car runs rich. What was the deal with yours? (maybe you IAC was friggin the mix? :stick: )

No it's not recommended.....It may still give you problems at different temperatures and altitudes. Try taking it off and giving it a good cleaning and reconnecting it. It's probably all carboned up.

I did take it off and cleaned it with carb cleaner..when I did unplug it, the idle dropped so that means its working?..Is there anyway to test it? voltage readings? Thats wierd that you cant smell the fumes..I have asthma so maybe that has something to do with it..Im going to make sure every exhaust bolt is tight tomorrow..since the whole system is new (including the headers) I bet some of the bolts have worked loose but you cant tell by the sound..when I had the old exhaust system on last year, it had tails and no fumes were getting in the car..sucks when you have a medical condition and cant do what you want!

I have a hanging idle on my car. I just ordered the IAC adjuster of 5.0 resto. Its gonna get here this week. Hopefully it will solve my problem...I let you know.

Well, I put my tails on yesterday..and it sounds so much better now! Its a lot quieter at idle(dont get me wrong, I love loud..but listening to it for 2 hours straight gets annoying!)and it has a deep basser sound now..Im still working on the idle problem..I installed a thing called a "motorvator" its a 1" piece of aluminum that goes between the throttle body and egr plate..its supposed to swirl the air and get better HP..Its a load of crap and they suckered me out of $70.00..i think that thing is making the idle jumpy..i'll let you know what happens BTW..the avatar is not my car,its a car I found off a website i need this door molding and i put a request on the parts site because I dont have a hosting site to send pictures to

I have a very similar problem with my Stang. With the IAC connected, it would idle around 1500 RPMs, and then climb a little bit. I tried fixing it by adjusting the throttle screw, and got it to idle around 800 RPMs or so, and that was with the screw almost as far out as it would go, almost not even touching the plate. Also checked the TPS voltage, and it was fine. But then my friend and I noticed something interesting. With the IAC connected, the throttle felt like it was sticking. We couldn't figure out why it would do that with the IAC connected, but not do it with it disconnected. Very strange  So, I tried driving it like that, but the sticking throttle annoyed me, and not only that, I noticed that the engine would idle closer to 1000 RPMs after driving around for a while. I decided that I'd rather have the car run good with the IAC disconnected than having it act strange with the IAC connected, so I disconnected it again and readjusted the throttle screw so that it idles around 700 RPMS after it's warmed up. I have no idea why it acts the way it does with the IAC connected. If you figure it out, or if you hear something, please let me know. PM or e-mail me :)
