I'm in a sharing kinda mood > so here you go

For those who don't know I just thought I would give you a few pic's of what the in side of our T-45 5-speed tranmissions look like > the only diffrence from a 4.6 cobra trans and a 4.6 gt trans is the red colored speed ring on the tail shaft . cobras have a 7 tooth one gt's have a 8 tooth one other than that there the same > in 1999 all gt and cobra tranmissions were (up-graded) to the cobra trans and were the same till 2001 mid year when the tr-3650 was put in .

Unfortunately, I've seen the inside of a T45 before. If only they could have designed the shift forks to be a little stronger. :(

Interesting, so if the shift forks... what... bends? ...breaks...? I don't know that much but aren't T45s a good transmission? Is this a clutch issue?

Disclaimer: I am learning too...

i think im going to be looking at that same thing pretty soon, i think i have a bad input shaft bearing, i can hear it in the bell housing, and thought my shifter when idleing, and i know its not the motor/TOB, because i built a new motor, and changed the TOB twice:notnice: and i dont know how many more dead hooks it can take on the slicks:D....

t-45 are good transmissions when there behind a stock motor but they don't hold up to mods very well> if you up-grade the internals they can hold A LOT of power > I've found sites on line that sale t-45 rated for up to 750 HP with a after market shifter > I found out mine has been up-graded already and has lots of life left in it > but the never up-graded the SHIFT PLATES > which is what sent my car home on the trailer >stuck in 1st gear> I got both shift plate ( forged STEEL ) not cast alum stockers> they only cost me $35.00 for both with shipping :)

> and all mustang's v-8's gt or cobra had T-45's till mid year of 2001 when the swap to tr-3650 took place .
anyone running a T-45 hard should use a after market shifter > I've heard it over and over on countless web site's the stock shifter is the DEATH OF THE T-45's

Excellent information. I should really get a new shifter as soon as I pay for my dang 4.10 reinstall

The T45 is a strong transmission, but it can not handle being shifted too quickly and aggressivly. The shift forks are made from cast aluminum and tend to bend and or break. The shift fork is what slides along the rail to change the gears. There is one fork for the 1-2,another for the 3-4 and one for 5-R. Unfortunately, you have to dig pretty deep to reach the shift forks, so you have a huge repair bill.

One person mentioned that you need a good shifter to prevent damage to the transmission... I disagree. The shifter only changes your leverage, so you can not apply as much force to the internal components as the long stock shifter.

I had a bit of a horror story on the shift forks. I always power shift the car and have since I took it around 90k miles. At 145k miles, the 1-2 fork broke when I went for 2nd. I took it to the ford dealer and told them I wanted to replace the 1-2 fork and the 3-4 fork, becuase it is probably getting weak too (aluminum work hardens worse than other metals). They protested, saying they only want to do a full rebuild, but everything else was mechanically fine, so I only replaced the forks. I paid the rediculous bill, and went on my way. Just a few thousand miles later, the 3-4 fork broke!!! They replaced that fork and I honestly wasn't that hard on the car at all, since I had just paid all that money for the new forks. I took it to ford and they denied any fault for bad parts or wrong doing. That's impossible because the origional forks had 140k miles before they went bad, this one had only a few thousand miles! They refused to repair it. I removed the transmission myself and did a tear down. I found a bolt head broken off by the ford service tech, and their junky 3-4 fork was broken. I took it back with this new evidence and they agreed to put it back together with new forks. I provided upgraded forks from hanlon and everything seems to be working well so far.

.

most aftermarket shifters have adjustable stops built in, i know my pro 5.0 does, and they take the hit from the shift, not the shift fork, so they prevent breaking shift forks....

The stop doesn't help if you missed a shift from letting the pedal up to quickly, or otherwise timing poorly. I'm not a fan of the adjustable stops. 99% of people on this site don't know how to adjust the stops, so they are either too loose and completely ineffective or are tighten too much and put wear on the syncros.

ohh, i didnt think of them breaking like that too, but your right, because your pretty much trying to jam it into gear with no clutch....

so is the tr-3650 stronger than the t-45 or is it worse?

Talk about asking the right question's !!
The tr-3650 is rated for more tork than the t-45 but is it stronger ??? who knows > t-5's and t-45's and even tr-3650's can all be UP-GRADED to hold more power and more abuse but to say one is hands down stonger is a open debate > the only sure fire way to keep from working on your trans is not to beat on your car > but what kinda fun is that ??
You can sped a few grand and put in a t-56 ( the best imho) or a TKO 500 or TKO 600 but there are rumors they are very noisy > or you can just race it and build it > :Track:
