This is why I don't buy other people's projects. Well, actually I did once, my old Z28 Camaro, I learned hard that way. Sorry man but you are going to have to fix what this guy didn't do right.

I say fix that tranny before looking into the motor any... Even a 302 with those parts should run in the 12s or 13s... my opinion.

Since the tranny is going south I think I will save up and do a 5 speed swap. Parts wise how much should it cost. is it something that can be done in a driveway

How about taking it to a professional technician. Might charge you a dianostic charge but that's damn better than the extra cost and headache of throwing parts. I know, I know, every tom dick and harry is a tech but there is a far difference between someone who works on them on the side and someone who does it for a living where they have to get it right the first time or they wouldn't have a job.

I was running 14.6's@mid 96's mph stock with my 87GT 5 speed with 2.73's and 2.2 60' times. After a few small bolt-ons (Kirban FPR, A/C delete, Mac underdrive pullies, 140 Power Master Alt, Jacobs ignition, Mac 70mm TB/EGR, K&N filter, and Flex-a-lite electric fan, 2 1/4" Dyno-Max cat back) I was making 225 rwhp and 298 rwtq on the dyno and running high 13's. If the trans has issues get it looked at but if you think it's ok try to find a dyno and see if the motor is making the power it should be.

I would look for a low mileage used TKO setup. I know myself and my cousin both found some decent setups for under 2k. Also I noticed that you don't have your coolant lines (on throttle body) or your line from the valve covers to your throttle body. From what I have heard this isn't necessarily a good thing. Kinda makes you wonder what else has been bypassed or skipped.

For what its going to cost you to do a 5-speed swap, not to mention all of the time and effort involved in the conversion, you could build up one mean AOD with converter. It'll be both faster and more consistent than any 5-speed swap you're thinking of.

I would find out exactly what you have in the engine first. Pull a head off and measure bore and stroke to see if it is really a 331. While the head is off identify what brand and size it is. Back when I was younger and dumber I bought a used 69 Camaro the owner claimed had a high performance 327 in it. After painfully sorting through many hack-job issues I finally determined it was really a 307 with some used 327 heads bolted on. So check to make sure you really have a stroker, and since heads a such a critical part of a build you need to know what you got. That could save you lots of money and headaches later on.

Thanks for all the help. After talking it over with my stepdad I am going to go with another aod to save time and money. what size stall would you recomend. The car will be a daily driver but will go down the track once a month. What do those lines that aren't hooked up do

no, that is way low. It should go the other way anyways. should be 39 at idle and about 45 at throttle.

I bet you have a weak pump or restricted line. How old is the fuel filter.

I dont know how old the filter is I haven't changed it since I got the car and I don't know when the previous owner changed it. As soon as I get paid I will change it. Is it difficult to change?

fuel filter can be changed in about 15 minutes. Located in front of fuel tank. Fuel filters cost about $10.

Yeah with that setup you should be in the low 13s. I have a stock 86 block, e7 heads, bbk shortys, and ford countour fans and I hit 14.02@95 at California Speedway. Something is wrong. Run a compression test to make sure you got good comepression.

Put in the tranny and see what happens. As for the stall, that is the trick of the auto cars, choosing the right one for your combo! A T5 could be swapped for $10000, but probably wont last forever behind that motor.

did you guys not read this? I'm suprised it runs at all. It must be one hell of a strong engine to even be drivable with this condition.

I assume he meant $1000, but as everyone else has said, swap the fuel filter, get rid of whatever the hell happened to that shifter, and give it another go before getting into a trans swap

If I were to get the transmission that's in it rebuilt how much do you guys think that should run me. My plans for the car is a dd with some track time. When i am driving it and the car downshifts when i floor it the car feels like it has a ton of power but sometimes hesitates around 3k rpm. I have about had it with the motor is a 4.6 alot to convert
