I've got 3.73's ready to be installed, however now i'm thinking I should have bought 4.10's. I can always send them back to summit...what do you guys think I should do? (btw I did a search on this, i'm just asking again because most of the threads I read were from the 4.6 forums, and I wanted the opinions of ppl who actually drive 5.0's) I don't plan on boosting the motor soon (lol she needs a rebuild before that), and though its a possibility, I don't mind switching out the gears when that time comes. Thanks for your time and thoughts guys!

p.s. Just how short is first gear? :D

you're going to have a lot of problems gripping with the 4.10s, not to mention the high revved engine. just stick to the 3.73s, you already have them. trust me you will not regret it. a friend of a friend of mine has 4.30s on his mach1 5-speed and without the nittos, he can't do anything. i know you're not asking for 4.30s but for 4.10s, but you get the idea. i mean if you don't mind on buying nittos every 2 or 3 months, then go for it. IMO, 4.10s are for the aode mustangs

The 3:73's will keep you happy and give you the punch/launch you are looking for IMO. Anything is better than stock 2:73's. :D
I know alot of peeps that are happy with their 4:10's but they are to low for me for city driving.

If you race the car at all, and plan to keep it n/a for a while, then get the 4.10's. 4.10's are ideal for an n/a 302, you will get the most out of it at the track.

:stupid:

When I bought my car, it had 3.27's in it. Needless to say I wanted more kick, so I ordered some 3.73's. Mistake! I bought into the hype of the shoddy gas mileage, high revving engine, blah blah blah...so I got the 3.73's put in and it WAS a step up, but not as big as I had hoped. It wasn't long after that before I had 4.10's in the car, and man what a difference!

Now, I wouldn't recommend going with 4.10's if you have big commutes on the highway to work or school...I wouldn't want to drive 45 minutes at 85mph with them every day. But for around town and the occasional long trip, they are fine! The difference in RPM's between 3.73's and 4.10's at 60mph is only like 200 RPM's so don't believe the guys who say you'll be crusing around at 4k all day.

Advantages of 4.10's:
  • Gets you out of the hole much quicker than 3.73's
  • Harder to bog the car (actually easier to pull out and/or launch)
  • Top end speed goes down but you get there a HELL of a lot faster...besides don't be an idiot and go 140 on public roads anyway
  • 4th gear pulls hard as hell, and 5th gear is totally useable; you no longer have to worry about downshifting to pass or to go up hills

Gas mileage isn't much worse than 3.73's and traction isn't the huge problem that people make it out to be. I find that 99% of people who bash 4.10's either have 3.73's and are trying to justify their purchase, or have never run a 4.10 gear and do NOT speak from experience.

FWIW, I raced a 95 GT about a year ago from a red light. We had similar mods at the time, except he had 3.73's and I had my 4.10's. I pulled him hard out of the hole and just kept on pulling. We pulled over in a parking lot to talk, and the first thing he said was "Damn, I tell you what, I'm getting 4.10's!" :D

I didn't like the 4.10s in my 88 GT, first gear was waaay to short.

I do like the 3.73s in my 94.

You could always split the difference and get some 3.90s.

1 - First gear is pretty short with 3.73's also
2 - If you get tired of shifting out of 1st gear with 4.10's, just pull out in 2nd
3 - The pull of 4.10's more than makes up for any shortcomings. :D

But yeah not too many people run 3.90's...might be a good choice if you just can't decide.

got 4.10's in my 5spd. i love them to death. lil annoying when i get caught in traffic for like 2 hours but ill live. only been driving stick for like 6 months now so im only gonna get better and used to it. i always always start off in second gear unless im racing. so much easier.

i personally love my 4.10's but if i have much more power im sure traction would start to be an issue. but then again id run wider and stickier tires too :)

4.10s if you are staying n/a 302

i personally need my 3.73s because i will run out of gear on the bottle and i like to be able to go 120 in 4th from stopc and rolls.

I personally think its much easier to launch a street car witha highre numerical gear on street tires. it IS easier.
