Lol no worries! I’m only partially worthless so I was able to figure out the issue. I’m glad i was able to identify the issue. I am amazed how well it idles though so I’m thrilled so far. Ha!

Got the new controller installed and it’s working! As I suspected it’s pig rich! I manually started bringing down the idle area on the VE table then ran VE Analyze on normal for a while and it came down a lot more. Afr is still a bit rich around 13 at idle. This has bumped my idle up a little over 1000. What’s the proper way to adjust it down? I probably won’t get much road time for a bit since winter is in full swing here. I know I’ve read VE Analyze on a big cam can be a problem but what about with my E303? I don’t expect it to be the final solution but will it get it “close”
Thanks again for the help!

Step1. manually tune idle VE to 13.8-14.2 AFR
Step2. go into the warmup duty steps and lower the duty% at temp until car idles at the RPM you desire.
Step3. lock the timing in the ignition settings and sweep from 14*-25* take notes on the idle rpm and KPA from each timing amount.
Step4. set the timing at idle to the amount that nets you just under max vacuum
Step5 lower the idle valve duty % again until the car gets upset and surges- write this down... then take the idle duty% up until the car reaches the maximum idle speed you desire.

keep this information and i will show you how to use it to setup closed loop idle

@a91what thanks I will do this and take notes.
When you say lock the timing you mean set it to fixed and adjust from that window where it’s set at 20° currently I believe?

yes that is the easiest way to do it. The idea is that we want to know the usable idle valve and timing ranges, this way the closed loop idle is setup using real data rather than guessing at numbers. Take your time and take a datalog of the idle valve sweep and the timing sweep separately for me, we will use the data from the log files to build a histogram and check it against your notes!!

@a91what I’m going through these windows now to familiarize myself and the idle warm up duty/steps is greyed out. It was in CL idle while I was running yesterday could that be why? Am I missing a setting or will this be selectable once connected?

You want to change it to open loop idle in the idle settings window, then the warmup duty steps will be available.

@a91what Ok. Couple more questions to confirm I’m on the right track.
See my picture. This highlighted area is where I sweep the timing in step 3? Once I get the info from that I return it back to 20° then take the desired timing number and change it in my ignition table where the car is idling?
Sorry for all the questions.

sortof, you will change it back to 20 and return to "use table" so the timing is not locked. count to 6 every time you increase the timing 1* so the engine can stabilize for the datalog keep that info and I will show you what to do with it.

@a91what
Ok heres my data. had to do this a couple times since i found a bad plug. I just replaced them all since they were pretty rich fouled from before i got the afr dialed in.
while going through the timing from 14-25 i stopped at 16 since it was almost stalling and surging bad.
deg. kpa readings were
16---62
17---58
18---47.8
19---46.7
20---46
21---45.5
22---45
23---44.5
24---44
25---43

surging occurred around 15.3% duty cycle
I think the fuel table is generally quite rich with exception to the idle area which i adjusted.
of course i forgot to data log while doing this but i did data log after and its attached as well as current tune.

Thanks!

You are supposed to be looking at the boostvac gauge not the kPa (Map) for those values

Ugh
Guess it’s not that big of a deal to do it over. ‍

Edit* @a91what asked for kpa numbers in the instructions he posted

KPA values are just fine, normally we use vacuum as a reference when we dont have the software in front of us so you are OK.
I do need to know the AFR..

Did you do a sweep of the IAC duty% ???

Idle afr is 13.8-14
I did. And at about 15.3 it was surging
I set it to 16.5 for desired idle

I’m confused on what your asking for. Sorry having a brain fart. Do you want to know what rpm I’m at with 16.5% ? I’m idling at around 900rpm.
